Who is the queen bee? Detailed answer Directory / Big encyclopedia. Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? Who is the queen bee? For the appearance of the "queen" you need a colony of bees. But not all bees live in colonies. There are varieties of solitary bees. Among them there are only two types of bees - males and females laying eggs. But bees that live in colonies or families also have a third kind of bee called "worker bees". Worker bees are females that do not lay eggs. Thus, in the family of such bees there are workers, males, called "drones", and one female laying eggs, the mother of the whole family, which is called the uterus, or queen. This is how she spends her time. She spends the winter in a mink dug in a sandy place or somewhere else where there are suitable conditions. She is the only one of the whole family who survives the winter! In the spring, she lays the foundation for a new family. First, the queen seeks shelter - perhaps an abandoned mouse hole. Then she collects all the soft material in the hole in a heap and makes a recess under this heap, which should serve as a nursery. Then she flies around the flowers, collects pollen and nectar from them, and puts a ball of perga (a mixture of nectar and pollen) into a dry depression she has prepared. She lays several eggs on this lump, covers them with wax and sits on them, covering them from the cold air with her body. She makes a large wax cell called a honeycomb near herself, which she fills with enough honey to feed on until her eggs hatch. Once the first generation of her children are old enough to use wings, they take over most of their mother's work. They make wax, bee bread, fill honeycombs with honey to use it in non-flying weather. At the beginning of the season, only worker bees are born. But by the end of summer, young queens and males (or drones) appear in the family. In autumn, the family splits up. And the queen (or uterus) spent the whole summer doing nothing but laying eggs! In bees, the queen lays all the eggs, but she cannot take care of them. She is capable of laying 1500 eggs in a day and approximately 250 in an entire season! She lays fertilized eggs, from which, depending on the needs of the family, worker bees or queens may appear. Drones come out of unfertilized eggs. Young queens grow in special cells. Before they emerge, the queen and about half of the worker bees crawl out to form a new colony. The first young queen that gets out kills her sisters in their cells and, therefore, becomes the new queen queen! Author: Likum A. Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: How did the measure of the weight of precious stones come about? The seeds of the carob tree (ceratonia pod) weighing about 0,2 g were considered identical to each other in the ancient world, therefore they were used as a measure of weight - carat. Subsequently, the carat became the traditional measure of the weight of precious stones.
