The Japanese symbol of the Buddhist idea of non-doing evil is three monkeys, one of which covers its ears (“I hear no evil”), the second one covers its eyes (“I see no evil”), and the third one covers its mouth (“I do not speak of evil”). Often a fourth monkey is added to this composition, which covers the crotch or stomach, thereby expressing the principle "I do not do evil." The fact that monkeys, and not other animals, were chosen as a symbol is explained by a pun in Japanese: the word "saru" denoting a monkey is consonant with the endings of the words in the phrase "mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru", which translates as "I see nothing, nothing I don't hear, I don't say anything.
