Why does the sun shine?

It's hard to believe, but the stars that shine at night and the Sun that shines during the day are the same.

The Sun is also the closest star to the Earth. We know that life depends on the Sun. Without solar heat, life would not have arisen on Earth. Without sunlight, there would be no green plants, animals, humans.

The Sun is over 172 km from Earth. The mass of the Sun is 000 times the mass of the Earth. But, interestingly, the Sun is not as solid as the Earth.

Proving this is very simple: the surface temperature of the Sun reaches 6000 °C. At this temperature, any metal or stone turns into gas, so the Sun must be a ball of gas!

In the past, scientists believed that sunlight and heat were the result of combustion. But the surface of the Sun has been hot for hundreds of millions of years, and nothing can burn for that long.

Today, scientists believe that the Sun releases heat as a result of processes similar to those that occur in an atomic bomb. The sun turns matter into energy.

This process is different from combustion. During combustion, one form of matter passes into another. In the transition of matter into energy, a minimum amount of matter is needed to produce a huge amount of energy. Twenty-eight grams of matter releases enough energy to melt more than 1 million tons of rock.

So, if science is right, the sun shines because there is a constant transformation of matter into energy. One percent of the Sun's mass is enough to keep it hot for 150 billion years!

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What literary work is wrongly attributed to Hemingway?

Hemingway is often credited with writing the shortest poignant story: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." The writer allegedly made a bet with friends that he would write a finished work of six words, and won 10 dollars from them. In fact, actual advertisements for children's shoes or strollers appeared in American newspapers long before Hemingway's writing career began. Various authors have published articles discussing such announcements, describing them as short stories, and the story of Hemingway's bet did not appear in print until the 1990s.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Underwater volcanoes can warm entire continents 02.05.2021

The streams of hot water and ash that occur during eruptions on the ocean floor provide heat exchange between it and the earth's crust. A new study by two mathematicians from the University of Leeds has estimated the magnitude of heat released from deep-sea volcanic eruptions.

Taking the thickness of volcanic deposits on the ocean floor as a starting point, and creating a mathematical model of their transport, the researchers showed that volcanic eruptions in a short time release energy equivalent to the annual energy consumption of the entire United States, and that the resulting hot flows significantly affect the temperature of the ocean depths, heating them noticeably.

At the same time, most of the Earth's volcanic activity occurs not on land, but under water, mainly at a depth of several kilometers. But, unlike terrestrial volcanoes, these eruptions can be extremely difficult to even detect. As a result, the intensity of underwater volcanism and its impact on the World Ocean on a global scale remain underestimated and practically unexplored. Meanwhile, it is huge - so, in 2019, the birth of an underwater volcano in the Indian Ocean caused a series of earthquakes that were felt around the world.
