Birds of prey American shrike that prey on insects, lizards and smaller birds do not have large enough claws. Therefore, in order to eat their prey, they impale it on something sharp - for example, thorns of an acacia bush or protruding ends of barbed wire, for which they received the nickname "butcher birds". Where and when was a bicycle race organized to escape to another country?

In 1915, a group of athletes from the Belgian Liege asked the commandant of the German occupation troops for permission to hold a bicycle race in order to raise funds to help the victims of the war. He agreed on the condition that each participant put a German flag on the bike. The route of the race was assigned from Liège to the village of Molingen near the Belgian-Dutch border. At the finish line, the cyclists did not stop and went straight to the Netherlands, which was a neutral state during the First World War, and the German soldiers guarding the track did not have time to prevent the fugitives.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Car Wi-Fi will improve road safety 30.08.2014

The American authorities intend to oblige automakers to equip their vehicles with wireless networks, with the help of which cars on the roads will interact with each other. Such "communication" can annually save several hundred lives.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is calling for the rapid development of a national standard for automatic exchange between moving vehicles in close proximity to each other. Such communications, called Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), will help increase the speed of urban and suburban traffic, warn drivers about traffic jams and adverse weather and road conditions, and build a route based on this information.

V2V technologies will also improve road safety. According to NHTSA estimates, the massive introduction of just two Left Turn Assist and Intersection Movement Assist systems will help prevent up to 592 accidents per year and save about 1080 lives.

Left Turn Assist is a technology that warns drivers that they will not have time to make a left turn at an intersection, taking into account the speed of oncoming traffic. The Intersection Movement Assis function, estimating the location and speed of vehicles traveling nearby, will notify you of a possible danger of crossing roads. V2V communication functionality also includes blind spot monitoring, oncoming collision warning, emergency braking information for the vehicle in front, and more.

According to ABI Research researchers, by 2027, about 62% of new machines will be equipped with communication technologies. They are already being tested by many automakers. For example, Ford has developed an "electronic brake light" that signals to other road users that the driver has braked hard. A special alert appears on the dashboard of their cars.

For the national V2V standard, the US traffic safety authorities propose to allocate the 5,85-5,925 GHz frequency range, as well as use the IEEE 802.11p standard, which is a type of Wi-Fi for use in vehicles. Installing V2V communications will increase the cost of the vehicle by an average of $340-$350. In the future, it will be possible to reduce these costs to $209-$227, the department says.
