Which insect lives the longest?

For some reason, nature gave insects a very short lifespan compared to other living creatures that inhabit the Earth. But among the many insects there is one that enjoys life longer than many inhabitants of the animal world. Such an insect is one of the varieties of cicada, living for 17 years! No other insect, with the exception of only the termite queen, can even come close to this lifespan limit.

However, it is unlikely that other insects should envy the cicada, because for all 17 years it sleeps underground, after which it comes out into the light to live another 5 weeks and die. Why nature took these 17 years to develop such a tiny insect, no one knows. It is only known that the cicada lays its eggs on the branches of trees.

Only after hatching, small cicadas fall down and burrow into the ground, attaching to the roots. In this position, these pupae remain motionless for the next 17 years, feeding on the juice of the roots.

After this period, some unknown force makes them come out into the light. They climb the tree, their shell opens and a mature cicada emerges from it. By the way, the piercing sound that you sometimes heard outside the city is made by a male cicada. The male cicada has small cymbals that he tirelessly makes vibrate with his muscles. Scientists claim that the cicada's organ that produces this sound is the most complex "musical" organ known in nature.

There are over 800 varieties of cicadas, but the long-lived cicada is found only in the United States. Most cicadas live for about two years.

The title of which Rembrandt painting is the opposite of the artist's intent?

Painted in 1642, Rembrandt's "Speech of the rifle company of Captain Frans Banning Cock and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburg" eventually became better known as "Night Watch". However, during the restoration of the canvas in 1947, it turned out that the word "night" is not very appropriate here. Rembrandt covered the painting with several layers of dark varnish, and over the long years of being in the Amsterdam City Hall, she also became a victim of soot from the fireplace. The cleaning of the canvas, coupled with the analysis of the shadows from the characters, showed that the action takes place between noon and two in the afternoon.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Device to quickly stop bleeding 18.12.2015

Prompt cessation of bleeding in a gunshot wound is the most important factor in survival. According to the US Department of Defense Institute for Surgical Research, 30-40% of people with gunshot wounds die as a result of blood loss and 33-56% of them die before arriving at the hospital.

The XSTAT Rapid Hemostasis System technology, patented by the American company RevMedX, is used to stop bleeding within 15 seconds and is indispensable in areas of the body where it is physically impossible to apply a conventional tourniquet.

XSTAT 30 is a large syringe applicator with a diameter of 30 millimeters containing 92 compressed cellulose sponges in the form of a tablet coated with a special absorbent layer.

When injected into a wound, the sponges swell and fill the wound cavity, thereby creating a physical barrier to blood flow. The number of jaws used can vary depending on the diameter and depth of the bullet hole.

The XSTAT 30 applicator is able to absorb about 0,6 liters of blood and stop bleeding for up to 4 hours. To facilitate extraction of the sponges from the wound, each of them contains an X-shaped radiological marker that will be clearly visible on the x-ray.

The unusual device was approved by the FDA in April last year for use by the Pentagon during the fighting, now the new technology is available to civilians.
