The guinea pig is a rodent that has nothing to do with the sea or pigs. There are several versions regarding the origin of the association with the latter: these animals have a large head relative to the body and a dense neck, they can live in small enclosures for a long time, and the sounds they make are somewhat reminiscent of a pig squeal. And the epithet "marine", apparently, appeared because the animals were brought to Europe from across the sea, because their homeland is Peru and neighboring countries of South America. These rodents should not be confused with porpoises - a family of toothed whales.

Where do snails get their shells from?

You have probably watched a snail protrude from its shell, moving its horns from side to side. Would you like to eat one of these? Not? But in some countries, for example in France, snails are considered one of the best delicacies!

Snails belong to the family of mollusks - animals without a spine. Some of them live in gardens, others in ponds, and some even in the oceans. But there are two main types of snails - those that have a shell, and those that are covered only by a thin mantle. Representatives of the second group are usually called slugs. Land snails have a three-centimeter shell. And the slugs are about 7 cm long.

All snails have one large leg located on the underside. These creatures are equipped with one or two pairs of antennae, or horns. They have two eyes, which can be located both at the ends of the antennae and at their base, and a mouth. It often expands into a tube, at the end of which are small sharp teeth, with which the snail can scrape off parts of plants.

Some snails eat animal food. The oyster borer, for example, the yellow-shelled sea snail, bores through the oyster shell and feeds on its flesh.

Snails and slugs breathe either with one lung or with gills. Those shells, which are often beautifully shaped, are distinguished by the mantle. They are usually spiral coils that appear as the animal grows.

Most snails lay eggs, but in some species, young are born by live birth. Snails and slugs leave a wet, shiny trail behind them. This allows them to walk and stay wet. This mucus, drying up, clogs the sink in winter. Snails hibernate in cracks or pits.
