Origin: From Roman history. Messalina (c. 25 - 48 AD) - the third wife of the Roman emperor Claudius (10 BC - 54 AD), daughter of the patrician Valerius Messala Barbat, who became famous for her debauchery and shamelessness. Claudius became the wife of 44-year-old Claudius at the age of 14. Already being an empress, she visited one of the brothels of Rome - under the name of Lisiski and in a wig of blond hair. Anyone who refused her or recognized her paid for it with their lives. At the age of 23, she was executed by Claudius, who decided in this way to put an end to his shame.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The oldest brain 01.10.2009

French paleontologists have successfully used the hard X-rays from the Grenoble synchrotron to reveal small fossils in chunks of opaque amber. They came up with the idea that it is possible to shine through ordinary fossils.

Fossil fish from Kansas (USA) were placed under the beam as a test. And in the skull of one of them, a fish about half a meter long, an extinct relative of sharks and rays, they found a preserved brain. Of course, its soft tissues have long been replaced by minerals, mainly phosphates.

Using a drill, guided by 300D x-rays, the scientists were able to dissect the brain from the head of the fossilized fish. He is XNUMX million years old. Specialists even see separate parts of the brain on this fossil - the cerebellum, brain stem, optic lobes, outgoing cranial nerves.

This is the first case of the discovery of the preserved brain of ancient animals. Such soft tissues are extremely rare in the fossil state.
