What is the age of the earth?

We will never be able to give an exact answer to this question. Since time immemorial, man has been interested in the age of the Earth, and many myths and legends have appeared on this subject, which seemed to give an answer. But it was only about 400 years ago that this question began to be approached from a scientific point of view. At this time, it was proven that the Earth revolves around the Sun (in other words, that the Earth is part of the solar system), and now scientists knew where to start. From finding out the age of the Earth, what was needed was to explain how the solar system was born.

How did the sun and all the planets come about? One of the theories is called the nebular hypothesis. According to this theory, once upon a time a huge cloud of hot gas rushed through space, which decreased in size and heated up more and more.

As the gas cloud decreased, it threw out clumps of gas. Each of these clumps formed into a planet, and the remaining mass gathered in the center and became the Sun. Another explanation is called the planetesimal theory. According to it, millions and millions of years ago there was a huge accumulation of small solid bodies called planetesimals in space, with the Sun in the middle. A huge star passed nearby, under the influence of which parts of this mass came off. These parts attracted small planetesimals to themselves, just as snow sticks to a snowball, and so the planets appeared.

Regardless of the correctness of this or that theory, astronomers have calculated that this happened about 5 years ago! But not only astronomers, but also other scientists were engaged in solving this issue. They tried to find the answer by figuring out how many years it took the Earth to become what we know it to be. They determined the time it took for the oldest mountains to erode and the time for the oceans to accumulate their current amount of salt.

As a result of all studies, these scientists agreed with astronomers that the age of the Earth is approximately 5 years.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is surge flood?

When a strong and prolonged western wind raises the water level in the narrow Gulf of Finland, the Neva turns back and floods St. Petersburg, located on a low coast. This is an example of a surge flood. The two biggest ones happened exactly 100 years apart: in 1824 (remember A. S. Pushkin's poem "The Bronze Horseman") and in 1924. The dam built in the bay saved the city of Petra forever from this disaster.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

USB 3.2 standard 27.02.2019

Representatives of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced the future of the USB standard. It was decided to stop at the USB 3.2 standard and make it the main and only one for the next few years.

This important decision on the popular standard was made because there are several versions of the third generation of USB in the world: 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 - the last one was approved in 2017. All of them have different specifications, differing from each other in data transfer speed: first, speeds of 5 Gb / s were reached, then up to 10 Gb / s and up to 20 Gb / s in the case of USB 3.2.

However, due to confusion in specifications and an attempt to make backwards compatible connectors, there was a complete mess. Data transfer rates of 5 Gbps were mandated by the USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 specifications. 10 Gbps could be achieved with the USB 3.1 Gen 2 specifications. USB 3.2 specifications, by using two data lanes in a certified cable instead of one, they allowed both exchange at the level of 10 Gb / s and 20 Gb / s. In the case of only one line, depending on the version of the host controller, USB 3.2 can also work at 5 Gb / s.

As a result, the USB-IF organization was fed up with the confusion over the specifications of the third generation USB interface, and they decided to make USB 3.2 the main standard for this connector for the coming years. Thus, from the middle of 2019, all manufacturers will start releasing their devices with a USB 3.2 port, and there is no talk of USB 4.0 yet.

USB 3.2 will have three speed options: SuperSpeed USB, SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps, and SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps. For ordinary people, this is understandable and clearly speaks of the capabilities of USB ports.
