Extremes meet

Blaise Pascal
Blaise Pascal

Phraseologism: Extremes meet.

Meaning: About radicals holding extreme, seemingly opposing views. But precisely because of the extreme nature of their views, these people, despite the external differences between them, are similar to each other and therefore, in the final analysis, they reason and act in the same way.

Origin: From the essay "Thoughts" (1669) by the French philosopher and writer Blaise Pascal (1623-1662): "In the sciences there are two extremes that converge." The expression became popular in the form of Les extremes se touchent ("The extremes converge") thanks to the French writer Louis Sebastian Mercier (1740-1814), who named the chapter of his satirical work "The Picture of Paris" in this way.

Random phraseology:

Language is given to a diplomat in order to hide his thoughts.

Meaning:

About endurance, the ability to speak tactfully.

Origin:

According to legend, the words of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Charles Maurice de Talleyrand (1754-1838), which he said (1807) in a conversation with the Spanish ambassador to France, Izquierdo, when he reminded Talleyrand of the promises he had made to King Charles IV of Spain. Perhaps, in this case, Talleyrand only quoted a phrase from the play (scene 6) "Forced Marriage" by J. B. Molière.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Temperature microsensor powered by wireless radio waves 12.12.2015

The Internet of Things, which has been talked about a lot lately, is largely represented by wireless networks of sensors. Although such sensors are optimized in terms of energy consumption and can work for years without replacing the power source, the latter still remains their weak point. The specialists of the TU / e University in the Netherlands Eindhoven undertook to radically solve the problem. Some success has already been achieved - scientists have created the world's smallest temperature sensor, which is powered by radio wave energy from wireless networks.

Similar sensors can be made to measure not only temperature, but also other quantities.
A crystal with an area of 2 mm2 and a mass of 1,6 mg resembles a salt crystal. It can measure temperature and transmit readings wirelessly, using the radio wave energy of this same network as a power source. The work cycle consists of energy storage, temperature measurement and transmission of readings. The temperature value is encoded by the frequency.

So far, the communication range is very small - 2,5 cm, but for now it was important to show the fundamental efficiency of the idea. During the year, the developers expect to increase the radius to 1 m, and later - up to 5 m. The distance is measured from a router specially designed to work with such sensors. Project participants note that the router transmits radio waves to the sensor in a narrow direction, so it has very low power consumption. The sensor can operate under a protective layer such as paint, plastic or concrete. This allows you to literally "embed" it in the building in the process of construction or decoration.

Such sensors can be made to measure not only temperature, but also other quantities, such as humidity and light, as well as motion detection. The scope of their application, according to the developers, is extremely wide. The mass introduction of sensors will be facilitated by low price - a sensor manufactured according to 65 nm standards costs about 20 US cents.
