The giant planets Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus have rings.

The ring of Saturn was discovered by the Dutch scientist Huygens in 1656, although even earlier, Galileo, looking at Saturn through his weak telescope, discovered that this planet was surrounded by something.

The study of Saturn showed that the ring does not touch the surface of the planet anywhere, it consists of several rings nested in each other and separated by gaps. The rings are not solid, but consist of individual particles, large and small, which, like satellites, revolve around the planet, collectively forming rings.

The presence of a ring around the planet Jupiter was predicted in 1960 by the scientist Sergei Konstantinovich Vsekhsvyatsky, and in 1979 it was photographed by the American station Voyager. It is very thin, consists of small stones and dust, and faces the Earth with an edge, so it is not visible from our planet.

Uranus has very thin rings that cannot be seen with a telescope. With the help of Voyager, they found 11 clear rings and several fuzzy, so-called diffuse ones. Studies of satellites and rings of distant planets will certainly bring many more interesting things.

What role did the Italian Pigafetta, a participant in the first circumnavigation of the world, play in the history of geographical discoveries?

The first circumnavigation of the world (1519-1522), one of the greatest accomplishments of man in the knowledge of the surrounding world, we often call Magellan's voyage. However, Ferdinand Magellan himself (1480-1521) failed to complete it: he died in a skirmish with the natives on Mactan Island (Philippines).

In a bitter twist of fate, the honors and rewards for the first round-the-world voyage initially fell to those who did everything possible to prevent Magellan from committing his immortal deed.

The glory of Magellan at first went to Sebastian del Cano, the captain of the Victoria, the only one of the five ships of the squadron led by Magellan, who completed the circumnavigation. But it was del Cano who was one of the three captains who revolted against Magellan, one of those who most fiercely tried to undermine the life work of the great Portuguese.

Even Captain Esteban Gomez, who deserted in the Strait of Magellan and at the trial in Seville showed that it was not a strait that was found, but only a deep bay.

The truth about whose creation and whose merit was the great feat of the first circumnavigation of the world, mankind learned only thanks to Antonio Francesco Pigafetta (1491-1534). This Italian from the city of Vincenza was a supernumerary member of the expedition. During the voyage, he kept diaries, and upon his return, with disinterested devotion, he took the side of the forever silent Magellan.

In his famous book "For the first time around the world" (in Russian translation - "Journey of Magellan") Pigafetta told the world in detail about the actual circumstances of the expedition, including the almost inhuman perseverance that its leader had to show in order to achieve the goal of his life.

In an appeal to the master of the Order of Rhodes, to whom this book is dedicated, Pigafetta outlined the personality of Magellan in the following words: “I hope that the glory of such a noble captain will never fade away. Among the many virtues that adorned him, it is especially noteworthy that he was in the greatest disasters was invariably the most persistent of all. There was no one in the whole world who could surpass him in the knowledge of maps and navigation. The truth of what has been said follows from the fact that he accomplished a deed that no one before him had dared to either conceive or undertake. "
