How did the Inca empire die?

In 1531, Francisco Pizarro was the first to land on the coast of what is now Ecuador. There he discovered an empire that stretched almost three thousand miles along the west coast of South America. It was the great Inca empire. The population of this empire was 16 people, it was larger than any European state that existed at that time. The empire was well run. Every citizen worked, and the state bins were full of grain, so that no one was hungry, even if there was a crop failure in some province. Good roads led to all parts of the country, so news and decrees reached every village.

Life in the Inca empire was completely controlled, and everyone was so obedient that, perhaps, this is why the decline of the empire occurred. When Pizarro invaded the empire with his 180 soldiers, a conflict broke out between the Inca leaders Huascar and his half-brother Atahualpa, who should be the ruler. Atahualpa won. Pizarro captured him by treason. At the same time Huascar was captured and killed. Pizarro then killed Atahualpa as well. The Inca Empire was left without a leader and could not resist the Spanish invasion.

American Indians used to obey, but now the Spanish conquerors gave orders. The Spaniards were interested in the Incas mining, so they forced them to work in the mines. They neglected agriculture. Many Indians died from hard work and lack of food. The Inca Empire fell into decline. Many Indians survived this period, and their descendants became the main population of the Andes in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is an avalanche?

An avalanche is a descending mass of snow, ice, or mud with rocks. An avalanche of mud and rocks is a landslide that can occur even in snowless areas. A steep mountain slope or cliff is saturated with water or weakened in some other way. The ground can no longer be held on such a steep slope, and a collapse begins.

Such collapses or avalanches most often occur in the spring, when melting snow and ice soak the ground underneath. They can also occur when a river overflows its banks, or where people are building a road or excavating at the foot of a steep mountainside. Such landslides often cover mountain valleys, and thus large lakes are obtained.

Snow avalanches happen when snow can no longer hold onto a mountainside. Old, packed, crusted snow often sticks even on very steep slopes, but fresh, loose, loose snow often slips easily even from fairly sloping slopes. When a small snow avalanche begins, it often rips off large masses of snow that are in its path from its place, and continues on its way, increasing in size and gaining destructive power.

In those places where the snow lies so that it barely keeps from sliding, even the sound of a voice can be enough to move huge masses of snow from their place and start an avalanche. This is because sound vibrates the air, and these vibrations cause the snow to move.

In the Alps, when groups of climbers are climbing dangerous slopes, guides often insist that everyone remain completely silent, as vibrations from the sound of voices can cause an avalanche.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Neanderthals made glue 11.06.2023

The scientists analyzed the chemical structure of tar from the Königsau cave in Germany using infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. They found out that the substance was created artificially by the distant ancestors of man.

It turned out that birch tar was synthesized in underground chambers that limit the access of oxygen, which sheds light on the intellectual capabilities of Neanderthals.

Birch tar synthesized underground contains high levels of a natural polymer called suberin, while tar obtained by burning birch bark above ground does not contain it. Noting that all samples from Königsaue were rich in suberin, the researchers are confident that Neanderthals made their glue underground.

"If suberin is present only in birch tar obtained using underground techniques in low oxygen conditions, its presence in Koenigsaue tar clearly indicates that Neanderthals had a much deeper knowledge of chemistry than we thought," the experts said.
