How do some Wikipedia authors play tricks on readers?
Wikipedia sometimes contains hoax articles, partly or completely invented by their authors. One of the most illustrative examples was an article about the Bikolim conflict - a war allegedly taking place in the 17th century between Portugal and the Maratha State, provided with a large number of references to fictitious sources and designed according to all stylistic rules. Appearing in 2007, the article was a good one and ran for more than five years before the scam was exposed. In fairness, it should be noted that Wikipedia has created a special page that describes in detail all the identified hoaxes, and the total number of possible fake articles compared to the total volume of the encyclopedia is extremely small.

How did a French engineer save the Great Pyramids from dismantling for building materials?
Louis Linant de Belfon, before becoming the chief engineer for the construction of the Suez Canal, commanded the construction of dams and the laying of irrigation canals on the Nile. To optimize the work, the ruler of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha, suggested using a stone from the Great Pyramids. Belfon was against it, but he understood that in case of refusal, the pasha would hire another engineer. In order to save the Pyramids, he provided fictitious calculations, according to which it turned out that it would be cheaper to extract material from the quarries.

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Listening to birdsong can reduce anxiety and depression
29.10.2022
City and car noise negatively affects the psychological state of people, while the natural soundscape, namely birdsong, improves mood and reduces anxiety.
Scientists have studied the effects of urban (car noise) and natural (birdsong) soundscapes on mood, anxiety up to paranoia, and cognitive abilities. 295 volunteers took part in the experiment - they were exposed to street noise of low and strong intensity, and also listened to quiet and loud and varied birdsong. The mental state and mental activity of the study participants were assessed before and after sound exposure.
Soundscapes of road noise were associated with a significant increase in depression, with the more intense the noise, the more pronounced the deterioration in mental state. With regard to birdsong, depression only decreased after exposure to a soundscape with greater variety and loudness of sounds, and anxiety became significantly less even with quiet sounds. In this regard, scientists have not found the effect of different soundscapes on mental abilities.
"Thus, the present study suggests that listening to birdsong, regardless of the variety of sounds, reduces anxiety, while traffic noise, also regardless of the variety, is associated with higher depression. Overall, the results are interesting and open the way for further research," the authors of the study state.
