Who benefits?

Mark Tullius Cicero
Mark Tullius Cicero

Phraseologism: Who benefits?

Meaning: In a crime, a complicated case, intricacies of intrigue, and so on, one should always look for someone (those) who benefit from the current situation.

Origin: From the history of ancient Rome. The author of the expression is the famous Roman lawyer Cassian Longin Ravilla (I century). According to ancient authors, he recommended that judges, when considering a case, always look for who could benefit from a given crime: as a rule, this way of reasoning leads to the discovery of either the criminal himself and (or) the one who is behind him, directs his actions. It became widely known thanks to the speech "In Defense of Milo", delivered by the Roman statesman, writer and orator Cicero (Mark Tullius Cicero, 106 - 43 BC).

Random phraseology:

There will be no day, and sacred Troy will perish.

Meaning:

1. No matter how strong any state (someone's rule) may seem, but what should happen, in accordance with historical patterns, will inevitably happen. 2. It is also used in a playfully ironic form: if something undesirable can happen, it will certainly happen.

Origin:

From the poem "Iliad" (Song 4) by the legendary poet of Ancient Greece Homer (IX century BC).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Hydrogen Mercedes 12.04.2014

The German automaker Mercedes-Benz is going to present in 2017 a crossover powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Hydrogen-powered vehicles have a longer range than electric vehicles. An important distinguishing feature of such cars is the zero level of emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere. The German auto concern Mercedes-Benz is not going to lag behind its Japanese counterparts, and announced that in 2017 a Mercedes crossover operating on hydrogen fuel cells will be released. It is worth noting that a couple of years ago, at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, the German concern already showed a prototype of the all-wheel drive hydrogen Mercedes Ener-G-Force, which may well become the basis for a future car.

Mercedes-Benz said back in 2010 that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were an important part of the German automaker's strategy. The company is one of the pioneers in the use of hydrogen fuel cells, and in the next few years it will be able to move to a qualitatively new level.

At the same time, despite the readiness of German automakers to promote hydrogen technologies, infrastructure remains a weak point. Today, there are very few affordable hydrogen filling stations around the world: they are available in Germany, the UK, and also in the US state of California. Another problem hindering the development of the industry is the production of hydrogen. The fact is that the production of hydrogen on an industrial scale is still very expensive, despite the constant development of technology.

It is worth mentioning that to develop a hydrogen fuel cell system, the Mercedes-Benz concern attracted the Renault-Nissan alliance, Ford, and the German government, which gave guarantees for expanding the network of hydrogen filling stations by 2017 to 400 units.
