Tourist tips

First, decide what you need tent and in which company you are going to travel.

It is not worth focusing on the name, for example, 2-seater or 4-seater. How many people can sleep there is easier to determine by the size of the floor. For a comfortable overnight stay, 60 cm wide and 200 long are enough. Sometimes they consider the capacity of the tent as rugs - for three people 2 rugs. But if you travel near populated areas, keep in mind that all things should be brought into the tent at night, and this will take up another sleeping place.

In a pawn, when you carry everything on yourself, the weight plays one of the decisive roles. For water workers, and even more so for auto-moto tourists, weight is in the background and it is better to take care of comfort.

Tent structures

For simple hikes, for wooded areas, for tourists - water workers, a tent is quite suitable "small house". It can always be pulled between trees, oars, stocks, etc. In addition, more people fit in this tent than in tents with a round roof.

For mountain hiking it is better to use frame tents, because they can withstand wind loads better and do not require stakes.

In areas with high rainfall, again, tents that do not have large flat areas are better.

Tents with awning in all cases, they have an undeniable advantage over single-layer ones. In hot weather they are cooler, in cold weather they are warmer, at night they do not sweat inside. A simple tent without an awning is only good for short trips in good weather, i.e. when used mainly for protection against mosquitoes and ants, or when you don’t want to drag an awning, after all, an extra kg of cargo.

It is desirable that the tent had a bottom sewn to the walls, however, almost all modern tents have such a design. The bottom is usually made of waterproof fabrics (Neilon Tafetta silver, pu, Neilon Oxford PU, polyamide fabric (heavier, but more vicious)). Service life at good care of a tent and an awning - 3-5 years.

A well designed tent has:

corners reinforced with cordura or other dense fabric with braces (loops) sewn in power seams. It is very easy to distinguish a power seam: it usually looks like a cross, the letter "Z", moreover, stitched several times almost in the same place. A violation of the technology is the execution of such a seam "hole to hole" or "line to line", since the fabric is notched along the seam and a prerequisite for tearing the fabric is created;
line pitch no more than 3 mm. - various little things like pockets, ribbons under the ridge for hanging lamps and drying things, an entrance duplicated by an anti-mosquito net, and sometimes two;
duplicated (reinforced) with braid seams, or double stitching seams, called in everyday life "in the castle" and "linen"
all free edges must be hemmed;
fabric-reinforced grommet for rack mounting;
slopes of the tent, located at an angle of 45 + -5 degrees;
waterproof bottom with reinforced braces;
braces made of braid (slings), similar to the one that is put on the backpack ties;
power seams are made with lavsan threads. Others (even nylon and LH) rot when wet for a long time.

For more difficult conditions (for stony soils, highlands, deserts), it is better to take frame (arc tents). They are not demanding on the presence of stakes, as they are supplied with the frame. All of the above regarding technology (seams, reinforcements, guys) fully applies to arc tents. The distance between a tent made of ordinary thin nylon and an awning made of impregnated nylon should be at least 5-7 cm so that condensate does not flow back into the tent. The arcs must be very elastic. The best results were shown by carbon fiber multilayer pipes, duralumin racks made of D16t with a diameter of at least 12 mm. Fiberglass turned out to be very brittle and crumbled at the joints. Racks made of 10 mm duralumin tube have a high residual deformation, although they can be used in order to reduce weight.

One-layer tents can be used if the tent is spacious enough so that no one or nothing touches the walls at night or in cool weather or the air is so dry that condensation does not form. The awning on the arc tent must be glued at the seams with a special tape, otherwise, with a combination of rain and wind, the wind will push water even through vertically oriented seams.

In descriptions of modern tents, there is often such a characteristic as the height of the water column that the tent can withstand. It can be used to roughly estimate how much rain the fabric and seams of the tent can withstand.
