Which animals have an internal clock set to a 47-hour life cycle?

All animals observe the so-called circadian rhythm, that is, the cyclic change of biological processes in the body, tied to the 24-hour length of the earth's day. The need to maintain a circadian rhythm is genetically based, since even blind creatures can perceive changes in light with photoreceptors on the skin. However, an eyeless fish Phreaticthys andruzzii has recently been discovered living in underground caves, in which the internal clock is set not to 24, but to 47 hours. A mutation is to blame for this, which turned off all the light-sensitive receptors on the body of these fish.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why do we get tired?

Fatigue can be considered one of the types of poisoning! When the muscles of our body do some work, they produce lactic acid. If you remove lactic acid from a tired muscle, then we can immediately start working again! During muscle activity, the body also produces other substances known as fatigue toxin, or kenotoxin. The blood carries it throughout the body, and therefore the muscle itself, the whole body, and especially the brain, feel tired.

Scientists have conducted interesting experiments related to fatigue. If you force a dog to work until exhaustion, after which he falls asleep, and his blood is transfused into another dog, then the second dog will immediately feel tired and fall asleep too! If you pour the blood of a cheerful dog into a sleeping tired dog, then the latter will immediately wake up, not feeling tired anymore! But fatigue is not only a chemical process, it is also a biological process.

We cannot simply remove fatigue, we must give rest to the cells of the body. Losses must be restored, the nerve cells of the brain must be "recharged", and the joints of the limbs must restore the developed lubrication.

Sleep is also necessary to restore the energy of the body after it gets tired. In many cases, the best way to restore vigor in a tired body is by activating other parts of the body! Sometimes activity really helps to relax, because it enhances breathing. Blood begins to circulate faster, glands work more actively, and waste products are removed from tired parts of the body. But if you are completely exhausted, then it is best to sleep.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Nanorobot Generator 12.06.2007

US scientists have made a device that can power a nanorobot.

About a year ago, professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) Tsong Ling Wang proposed creating electricity generators for nanorobots using zinc oxide nanowires. This year, scientists under his leadership managed to realize the idea and make a prototype of a generator capable of delivering direct electric current. According to calculations, one cubic centimeter of such a generator can produce a huge voltage for a nanorobot - up to 4 V.

The generator is set up like this. Thousands of zinc oxide nanowires half a micron long have been grown on a gallium arsenide substrate. Between the wires and the substrate is a layer of zinc oxide - it collects electricity. And the second electrode consists of silicon oxide, on which thousands of bumps are grown, forming zigzag lines.

These tubercles are covered with platinum and are capable of conducting current. Under the action of vibration, the nanowires, firstly, generate electricity due to the piezoelectric effect, and secondly, their tips oscillate and close to the tubercles of the second electrode. This creates an electric current in the circuit.

According to the authors of the work, the generator will be useful for powering medical sensors implanted in the human body, and for autonomous sensors that monitor the state of the environment, and for hypothetical nanorobots, as well as for strengthening US defense.
