Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is plague?

The first written mention of the plague was in the Old Testament. The Philistines defeated the Israelites and were punished with the plague. Plague is an acute infectious disease that first affects rats and other rodents and then humans. It is caused by the microbe Bacillus pestis.

Fleas that feed on rodents spread the disease to humans by biting them. A person who has the plague develops a fever, shivering, and tumors appear in the groin. Spots appear on the skin. Due to the fact that these spots were dark in color and many people died from this disease, the plague was called the Black Death in the Middle Ages. It was also called the bubonic plague for the reason that the tumors in the groin were called the Greek word "bubo", which means "groin".

In English, the name of this disease is sometimes used in relation to any dangerous epidemic. One of the worst plagues in human history broke out in the fourteenth century. It began in Central Asia, reached the shores of the Black Sea, then was transported to European ports and spread throughout the continent in five years.

The first reaction to the arrival of the plague was panic, and people tried to leave the disaster area. But not everyone could do it. Various precautions were taken to prevent the spread of the plague. People were isolated in their homes, forbidding them to leave. No one had the right to visit them, and special people brought them food. When a plague patient died, all his property was burned.

The bubonic plague returned to Europe in the XNUMXth century. Almost half of the population of the French city of Lyon has died. About eighty-six thousand people died in Milan, and almost five hundred thousand in the Venetian Republic. Nowadays, everything is done to prevent the spread of the plague, and the main precaution is the control of rodents, especially rats.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Qualcomm S7 and S7 Pro headphones 26.10.2023

Qualcomm Corporation has introduced new audio platforms designed specifically for headphones and speakers - Qualcomm S7 and S7 Pro Gen1. These innovative chips promise optimal use of artificial intelligence algorithms, thus providing the best audio experience.

Benefits of the new platforms include a six-fold increase in overall performance and more than a hundred times faster AI algorithm calculations compared to the previous generation.

Particularly noteworthy is the Qualcomm Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology and micro-Wi-Fi connectivity introduced in the S7 Pro model. This innovation extends indoor connectivity while also supporting lossless music streaming at up to 192 kHz. Unlike Bluetooth, which is limited to 48 kHz at a distance of up to 10 meters, the new XPAN technology breaks new ground.

Dino Bekis, vice president of Qualcomm, noted: “When we lowered power consumption and added Wi-Fi support to the headphones, we were able to stream 96 kHz audio over Wi-Fi while maintaining 10 hours of playback on a 50 mAh battery. This way, we can transmit lossless audio over Wi-Fi at the same power consumption as lossless audio over Bluetooth."

New Snapdragon Sound technologies will be integrated into new Qualcomm products such as Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processors (for smartphones and tablets) and Snapdragon X Elite processors (for laptops), delivering a new level of wireless audio. Qualcomm partners, including brands such as Audio-Technica, Bose, Edifier, Fiio, Jabra, LG, Master & Dynamic, Shure and others, will provide compatible models for use with Snapdragon Sound technology.
