Safflower (American saffron, wild saffron, dye thistle)

Safflower seeds contain 15-37% oil (iodine value from 75 to 145). It is used to make the highest grades of margarine. As a technical product, it is used in the production of white paints and white enamels, where whiteness and the absence of yellowing over time are needed. In oriental cooking, safflower serves as a substitute for saffron.

It has long been known in the culture of India, Egypt, Iran, other countries of Asia and North Africa. It is considered a substitute for sunflower in the arid regions of Central Asia and in the southeastern regions of Russia. Safflower was brought to Europe, probably by the Arabs, first came to Spain, and then to Italy and France.

In southern Russia, safflower was grown as a garden plant in the second half of the XNUMXth century. In the beginning it was mistakenly called saffron. The very name of the plant comes from the Arabic "usfur" and, having changed, appeared in Russian, German and English.

The greatest variety of forms of safflower is characteristic of India. There are dwarf and tall plants, compact and branched, forms with leaves without thorns, which are eaten by animals.

The main areas in the country are located in the state of Maharashtra and on the arid plateau of the Deccan, where not a single oil crop succeeds. Safflower in India is grown on dry land, usually cultivated with wheat, barley and mung beans (3 rows of safflower and 6 or 12 rows of another crop).

Safflower (American saffron, wild saffron, dye thistle)

The genus Carthamus, family Asteraceae (Asteraceae) unites 19 species, of which one cultivated - Carthamus tinctorius L. - dye safflower. It does not occur in the wild, it is recognized that this is a mutagenic species.

Carthamus tinctorius L. - dye safflower. Dyeing safflower is an annual strongly branched herbaceous heat-loving plant. The root system is pivotal, well developed. Stem 50-75 cm high, with a whitish gloss. The leaves are sessile, often cut, rough, leathery, with small teeth along the edges, have thorns (there are forms without thorns). A direct relationship has been established between the number of thorns on the leaves and the oil content in the seeds.

Inflorescence - a basket with a diameter of 2-3 cm. On a plant from 5 to 50 baskets. Wrap scales end with needle-like teeth. The flowers are bright yellow, orange, contain cartamin - red of all tones and yellow dye, which is used in the handicraft production of carpets.

The fruit is an achene, white, glossy, has a shell layer, as well as a crest, which contributes to its incorporation in the soil. Luzziness - 40-50%, weight of 1000 seeds - 20-50 g.

Safflower (American saffron, wild saffron, dye thistle)

To obtain the dye, safflower is sown in its pure form. In this case, harvesting is carried out on the day of full opening of the flowers, with a delay, the amount of dye decreases markedly. Sometimes safflower is sown along the edges of fields as a hedge. Sowing time - from October to December, harvesting - in February - March.

The yield of seeds in joint crops is up to 0,1 t/ha, with clean crops - 0,6-0,7 t/ha.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Canon XEED 4K4Z Compact 600K Projector 09.11.2017

Canon has announced the launch of the XEED 4K600Z, a compact and bright Laser Phosphor LCOS projector with higher than hardware 4K resolution.

With 4K (4096 x 2400) native resolution, LCOS technology and advanced AISYS optical system based on Canon's specialized lenses, the XEED 4K600Z projector delivers high detail and accurate color reproduction in the sRGB color space. Luminous flux - 6000 lumens.

No distortion due to minimal field curvature, motion blur compensation, and ultra-fast response (1,0 frame lag at 60 Hz) further enhance image quality and viewing comfort. Sharp focus is virtually unaffected by working conditions: the image will be sharp even when projecting onto a curved or domed surface.

Together with the lens, the XEED 4K600Z weighs only 26 kg. It mounts at any angle, and the +/- 60% vertical and +/-10% horizontal lens shift motor allows you to shift the image without touching the projector itself, further simplifying installation.

A Wi-Fi connection allows you to remotely control the projector from iOS devices (in previous models, remote control was only possible with a wired LAN connection) . The new Canon Projector Service Tool for iOS saves time by allowing you to control your projector remotely, as well as view and resolve problems.

Instead of a traditional lamp, the XEED 4K600Z is equipped with a blue laser light source, which gives a more powerful light output and allows you to more accurately adjust the brightness level. As a result, the life of the projector has increased to 40 hours, and the need for maintenance has been significantly reduced - as well as the costs due to downtime.
