Ferula musky (sumbul, musky root)

Celery family - Apiaceae.

Perennial plant about 50 cm tall.

The root is thick, many-headed. In the upper part there are several corymbose branches. The leaves are harsh, slightly pubescent below; basal leaves are oval-triangular, with long petioles articulated with the blade; stem leaves with a simplified blade; upper - narrow lanceolate sheaths.

Inflorescence - 6-10-beam umbrella; umbels 10-15-flowered, calyx toothed, petals yellow, 0,7 mm long. Semi-fruits 7 mm long, flattened, 2 times longer than the stalks.

It is found in Central Asia (Turkestan Range, Zeravshan, Gissar Range) on rocky slopes.

The roots contain 2-4% essential oil with a fragrant musky smell. Dried roots have a bitter-spicy taste.

It is used for flavoring confectionery products, for canning, as well as in perfumery.

Cultivation:

  • Choice of location. Ferula musky prefers a sunny location and fertile, well-drained soil. It can be grown both outdoors and in pots.
  • Landing. Ferula musky can be planted in the ground in spring or autumn. The distance between plants should be about 30-60 cm. Planting depth is about 2-3 cm.
  • Care. Plants should be regularly watered and fed with compost or mineral fertilizers. It is necessary to remove weeds and loosen the soil to ensure sufficient oxygen in the root zone. It is also necessary to prune to improve the shape and provide new growth.
  • Cleaning. Ferula musky can be used to prepare various dishes, both fresh and dried.

Workpiece:
