USB 3.2 standard

27.02.2019

Representatives of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced the future of the USB standard. It was decided to stop at the USB 3.2 standard and make it the main and only one for the next few years.

This important decision on the popular standard was made because there are several versions of the third generation of USB in the world: 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 - the last one was approved in 2017. All of them have different specifications, differing from each other in data transfer speed: first, speeds of 5 Gb / s were reached, then up to 10 Gb / s and up to 20 Gb / s in the case of USB 3.2.

However, due to confusion in specifications and an attempt to make backwards compatible connectors, there was a complete mess. Data transfer rates of 5 Gbps were mandated by the USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 specifications. 10 Gbps could be achieved with the USB 3.1 Gen 2 specifications. USB 3.2 specifications, by using two data lanes in a certified cable instead of one, they allowed both exchange at the level of 10 Gb / s and 20 Gb / s. In the case of only one line, depending on the version of the host controller, USB 3.2 can also work at 5 Gb / s.

As a result, the USB-IF organization was fed up with the confusion over the specifications of the third generation USB interface, and they decided to make USB 3.2 the main standard for this connector for the coming years. Thus, from the middle of 2019, all manufacturers will start releasing their devices with a USB 3.2 port, and there is no talk of USB 4.0 yet.

USB 3.2 will have three speed options: SuperSpeed USB, SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps, and SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps. For ordinary people, this is understandable and clearly speaks of the capabilities of USB ports.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Revolutionary hybrid relay 26.11.2012

ABB experts have solved a problem that engineers have been struggling with for a hundred years. This is a power relay capable of controlling powerful high-voltage power lines. This discovery may seem highly specialized to some, but such a relay is of great importance and will to some extent affect the lives of billions of people. Today, renewable energy sources are becoming more widespread. However, they have serious drawbacks: windmills and solar panels can be located far from the consumer and at the same time give out different power depending on the time of day and weather conditions. High-efficiency permanent transmission lines should help solve the problem of integrating "green" energy sources into conventional power grids.

ABB has developed a fast and efficient automatic high voltage DC relay. The relay is capable of stopping and redirecting a huge amount of energy equal to the entire output power of a nuclear power plant in 5 milliseconds. This allows you to smooth out peaks in energy consumption and production, turn off emergency sections of the power grid and maintain the performance of the entire power supply system. Today, in the event of a serious accident, entire regions are disconnected from the energy supply.

Despite the apparent simplicity of such a device, it was not possible to create it for 100 years. Mechanical switches are not suitable - they work too slowly. Power electronics based on transistors can solve this problem, but such relays are incredibly expensive and not widely used. ABB has combined the strengths of the two systems to create a mechanical/electronic hybrid relay. With the highest efficiency, the new device is much cheaper than purely electronic systems.

The new relay will effectively integrate such promising energy sources as solar panels and wind farms into national power systems. In addition, the problem of using AC and DC in the same electrical network still persists. In our homes, the mains supply contains alternating current that is convenient to use, but is inefficient for transmission over long distances. DC transmission lines have long been used to transmit electricity over long distances and from powerful energy sources such as hydroelectric power plants.

However, without the appropriate fast, reliable relays, building large, safe, reliable DC power lines is a challenge. ABB is currently working on a new relay control algorithm that will improve the safety and reliability of complex power systems with many different energy sources.
