Who and when in the conditions of the Antarctic station removed his own appendix?

On April 29, 1961, the doctor of the sixth Soviet Antarctic expedition, Leonid Rogozov, felt weakness and pain in the right iliac region, as well as an increase in body temperature. In the absence of other doctors, he diagnosed himself with acute appendicitis and decided to perform an operation to remove the appendix himself, since there was no way to fly out of the station. Rogozov was assisted by two employees who gave tools and held a mirror to his stomach. In 1 hour 45 minutes, Rogozov completed all the necessary steps and successfully completed the operation.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

When did man start using a knife and fork?

Let's think logically. Imagine a time when there were no forks, knives and spoons. What do you think man would have invented before? Not a knife, as a person could break food with his hands. Not a fork, as he could pick it up with his fingers. But to eat liquid, especially hot food, he needed a spoon! So man first invented the spoon. Indeed, the found tools, similar to a spoon, belong to the Stone Age! The Egyptians made spoons from wood, stone and ivory, while the Greeks used bronze and silver spoons.

However, when a person began to use a knife and fork, it really was a big step forward. By the way, it was made quite recently. 300 years ago, knives and forks at the table were unusual things.

In France, until the XNUMXth century, they took food with their hands. This does not mean that knives and forks did not exist before that time. Ancient man used the likeness of a fork, but it was not like ours. It could be made from a small flyer. As you know, the first real forks were long, two-pronged, made of iron, bone or hardwood. They were used only for cooking and for holding meat when it was cut.

Forks began to be used at the table in the 300th century, but very few people were so refined that they needed a fork. The knife, of course, was one of the first inventions of man, in the sense that he made himself a cutting tool from flint or other stone. But there was no such tool as a table knife in antiquity. Even XNUMX years ago it was such a rarity that most people didn't know about it.

After the XNUMXth century, table knives appeared in England and soon became common. But poor people could not afford them, so most continued to eat with their hands.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Mercedes electric cars with wireless charging 28.09.2014

A wireless charging system for electric and hybrid Mercedes vehicles could be available within two years.

The first model equipped with this option will most likely be the S500 Plug-in hybrid sedan. Just on his example, a demonstration of technology to journalists has already been carried out.

The system includes a charging pad that connects to household power and is installed on the floor of the garage, as well as panels under the engine compartment of the car. The energy to charge the car's batteries is transferred by electromagnetic induction. It takes just 2 hours to fully charge the S-Class Hybrid battery wirelessly.

The driver who wants to activate the process of charging the batteries needs to position his car in the parking lot correctly. To facilitate this task, the sedan was equipped with a special assistance system.

The parking space is shown on the display with two yellow stripes at the edges, between which the car must be parked. Once the machine is in the correct position, the stripes will change color to green to indicate that the batteries are being charged.

Representatives of Mercedes-Benz say that the system is completely safe and is not capable of harming either people or pets.

Mercedes is working on inductive wireless charging technology with BMW to come up with a common standard. Thanks to this, in a garage equipped with a new system, it will be possible to charge the batteries of both the Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive and the BMW i3.
