What trick allowed the builders to make the Chrysler Building the tallest building?

Many skyscrapers were being built in New York City in the 1920s, and several buildings ended up claiming the title of tallest in the world. One of them was a skyscraper at 40 Wall Street, whose builders changed the design shortly before the completion of work and took the lead in the meter competition. Then the competing architects of the Chrysler Building skyscraper went to the trick, secretly constructing a spire 38 meters high inside the building under construction. The operation to install the spire took only an hour and a half. The rivals were not ready for such a turn of events, and the final height of 319 meters allowed the Chrysler Building to overtake in height not only all the skyscrapers of New York, but also the Eiffel Tower.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What was the main reason for the transition to a time zone system in the 19th century?

Until the 19th century, there was no division into time zones, everywhere the time was determined by the Sun. There was no need for time zones, as there was no high-speed transport. The unification was due to the development of railways in England, because due to time differences in each city it was very difficult to draw up a normal schedule. It was the railway companies who ensured that there was one GMT time zone throughout the country. And then gradually the system of time zones began to spread around the world.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

1000-core KiloCore processor 19.06.2016

Researchers from the University of California at Davis (USA) have developed a 1000-core KiloCore processor. IBM Corporation manufactured it using a 32nm process.

Each KiloCore processor core is capable of operating independently and running its own firmware. "This is much more efficient than the approach used in GPU processors. The idea is to break the application into many subroutines, each of which can be run in parallel on a separate core. Thus, high performance will be achieved with low power consumption" , the authors reported.

Because each core runs at its own clock speed, it can be disabled to save power. The maximum clock speed of the cores is limited to 1,78 GHz. The nuclei send information to each other directly. There is no shared memory that could become a bottleneck in data processing," said architect Brent Bohnenstieh.

KiloCore may not be the world's first 1000-core processor. But its authors argue that it has no equal in terms of efficiency.

According to the developers, KiloCore has 621 million transistors and is capable of executing 1,78 trillion commands per second, consuming 0,7 watts. An AA battery can be used as a power source. KiloCore is more than 100 times more efficient at executing commands than a modern laptop processor.

A number of demo programs have already been developed for the chip. They are designed to encode and decode wireless signals, process video streams, encrypt and perform other tasks associated with the processing of large amounts of data, where parallelization can significantly increase the efficiency of the process.

For the convenience of programming the chip, the researchers developed an appropriate compiler and a tool for automatically distributing programs among the cores.
