Killer satellites

23.08.2019

The potential military rivalry of world powers in space made Japan think about creating satellites that could destroy similar devices of other countries.

As early as the second half of 2020, Japan may launch killer satellites into orbit, the main function of which is to destroy other satellites in the event of a threat from them.

Currently, the Japan Self-Defense Forces have satellites in orbit that are only capable of collecting and transmitting information to Earth. At the same time, the country considers the scenario of a space confrontation and the preparation of combat satellites by Russia and China to be quite real, so the Japanese Ministry of Defense intends to prepare its own response to a potential threat.

In addition to killer satellites, Japan is working on creating electronic warfare equipment in space and protecting its satellites from similar technologies from other countries.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The battery heals itself 22.11.2013

Scientists from Stanford University have developed the first electrode that has the property of self-healing. This can significantly extend the life of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones and other devices. The secret lies in the coating of the electrode with an elastic polymer, which tightens microcracks in the electrode material that occur during battery operation.

"Self-healing plays a critical role in the survival and longevity of animals and plants," commented Chao Wang, a Stanford University researcher and co-lead of the project. "So we decided to provide this property to lithium-ion batteries so they can last longer. ".

Wang came up with the idea of covering the electrode with an elastic polymer after meeting a team in a lab that is developing electronic skin for robots. He took the material used for this purpose as a basis, adding graphite nanoparticles to the polymer so that the material conducts an electric current.

“We found that the lifetime of the silicon electrodes increased 10 times after we coated them with the polymer we created,” Wang said, explaining that within a few hours, the polymer completely eliminates any microcracks in the thickness of the electrode.

Under laboratory conditions, the researchers were able to perform 100 battery recharge cycles without degrading its capacity. The goal is to achieve 500 cycles for a smartphone battery and 3 cycles for an electric car battery.

As the scientists explained, they took the silicon electrode because silicon is the most promising material for the manufacture of electrodes, since it contains a huge number of ions. However, this property has a downside - with each charge, the electrode increases in size by a maximum of 3 times, again decreasing to the nominal size when the battery is discharged. This process leads to a rapid destruction of the structure of the material and a drop in the properties of the battery.
