Photos instead of satellites for the new navigation system

29.09.2012

The Munich Polytechnic Institute developed the original NAVVIS positioning technology, which is based not on satellite signals, but on visual information. NAVVIS is a smartphone application that allows users to find their current location on a map. All you need to do is take a picture of the area around you. The application independently compares the photo with the image stored in the database and determines the exact position of the user (up to a meter), as well as the direction in which he moves. In doing so, it uses arrows to indicate the way in a three-dimensional projection.

In order for the NAVVIS system to function reliably, it was necessary not only to develop a special recognition system, but also to do a lot of preliminary work. First, a XNUMXD lidar scan of the area is carried out, which creates a "skeletal" XNUMXD map of the environment. After that, a lot of pictures of buildings are taken, including their characteristic features, such as stairs and signposts. Then certain points on the XNUMXD map are associated with the photographs. Thanks to this information, the navigation system allows you to navigate in any space, for example, quickly find the "Mona Lisa" in the Louvre.

However, unlike museums, many buildings and streets are often rebuilt. How will NAVVIS function in such conditions, since its database will become obsolete? This problem is solved by the users themselves, who take changes on the smartphone camera and thus update the database.

NAVVIS is ideal for areas where satellite navigation is not available, such as buildings, city streets, subways, etc. At the same time, wireless networks can be used for NAVVIS operation, which can also be used for rough positioning. It is very easy to use such a system: NAVVIS loads visual data packets when you start the application. The user takes a snapshot of their surroundings, and in a fraction of a second the program compares it to the image database and shows the user's exact location.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Touch displays without the use of rare earth elements 06.01.2014

3M plans to start manufacturing touch screens based on silver nanowires in 2014.

The technology for the production of silver nanowires was developed by Cambrios Technologies. In the production of touch panels from nanowires, a thin electrically conductive layer will be formed. Previously, such a layer was made from a mixture of oxides of tin (10%) and indium (90% by weight). Compared to a mixture of indium and tin oxides, silver has better characteristics, and, in addition, is a more affordable material. To date, as the press service of 3M emphasizes, several designs of touch displays have already been patented for various devices, from full-size monitors to mobile phones.

One of the main advantages of silver nanowires is their flexibility. In addition, displays made with this material have shown high transparency (89%), which the company claims will enable higher contrast screens. The flexibility of the silver substrate will also allow the creation of curved displays. Moreover, there may be displays that can be rolled up. Next year, it is planned to increase the production volume to 600 thousand square meters. meters of touch screens per month.

Indium is a rare earth metal that is produced in the amount of about 700 tons per year, more than half of which is mined in China. At the same time, almost 30 times more silver is mined in the world every year, and its reserves in the earth's crust are estimated to be higher.

According to forecasts made at the beginning of 2010, indium should actually run out by the end of the decade: existing deposits will run out, and technologists will have to look for an alternative to this element, or develop new sources of it. In addition to silver, carbon nanotubes are also called an alternative to indium.
