The Danish artist Asger Jorn and the French writer Debord Guy published the book "Memoirs" in 1959. Each page consists of two layers: on the first one there are quotes, text clippings and illustrations from newspapers and magazines, and on top of them chaotic spots are printed with a second layer of colored paints. The cover of this book is made of sandpaper, which, according to the authors' idea, should spoil any other books standing on the same shelf next to the Memoirs.

How do we taste food?

Taste is produced by the action of various soluble substances on the taste buds. If the atoms of a substance cannot move freely enough, we will not taste the substance. This is why we can only taste soluble substances. In animals living in water, taste buds are located on the surface of the body. For example, fish can taste with their tail fins!

In animals living on the earth's surface, taste buds are concentrated mainly in the mouth, while in humans they are only on the tongue. If you look at your tongue in a mirror, you will see that it is covered with small tubercles - papillae. Taste buds are located on the walls of these papillae.

The number of taste buds in animals depends on individual characteristics. For example, whales swallow whole schools of fish without chewing because they have very few or no taste buds. A pig has 5500, a cow has 35, and an antelope has 000 taste buds. A person has not so many of them - only 50.

On the human tongue, taste buds are distributed in different zones. Each zone perceives a certain taste. The back of the tongue is more susceptible to bitter. The sides are sensitive to sour and salty, and the tip of the tongue to sweet tastes. There are no taste buds in the center of the tongue. There is no taste at all in this place. The sense of smell plays an important role in the taste process. "Tasty or tasteless" - mostly determines our sense of smell. It's no wonder we find foods like coffee, tea, apples, oranges, and lemons delicious.

For example, when we drink coffee, we first experience warmth, then bitterness, and finally sweetness (if sugar has been added). We can say that coffee is really delicious only when its smell, having passed through the larynx and nose, will give a signal to our brain. If you pinch your nose with a clothes dryer, not only will you not be able to tell the taste of coffee, but you won't even be able to tell the difference between two completely different foods you eat or drink!

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Nanolaser for photonics 10.08.2012

Scientists at the University of Texas, in collaboration with colleagues from Taiwan and China, have created the world's smallest semiconductor nanolaser. This device can make a breakthrough in the field of photonics with great promise for computing, medicine, telecom and other industries. For the first time, scientists have succeeded in creating a laser that emits continuously at a wavelength below the diffraction limit. The green light of a nanolaser is too weak to be seen with the naked eye.

Miniature semiconductor lasers are a key ingredient for the fast, energy-efficient computers of the future that will use photons rather than electrons to transmit signals. Such computers using nanolasers will be able to generate optical signals and transmit information much faster and with less heat than electronic devices. However, until now, the size and performance of photonic devices have been limited by the XNUMXD optical diffraction limit.

The nanolaser is made of gallium nitride rods, which are partially filled with indium gallium nitride (usually these materials are used in LEDs). The top of the nanorods is coated with a thin 5 nm insulating layer of silicon, which in turn is coated with a layer of silver film (28 nm) that is perfectly smooth at the atomic level (see diagram). A smooth surface is the key to creating photonic devices that do not scatter or lose plasmons used to transmit large amounts of data.

Thus, for the first time, scientists were able to overcome the problem of discrepancy between the sizes of electronics and photonic devices, which was the main barrier to the creation of compact optical microcircuits and communication devices.
