At one time, the US Military Mapping Agency (now the National Agency for Visual Aids and Mapping) developed a special system of rectangular coordinates for the needs of the military department. The system was named "Grid on the Universal Transverse Mercator Projection" (SUPM). It covers the entire globe with a network of lines, the distance between which on the ground is 1000 m. The SUPM system divides the globe into 60 numbered zones (like slices of an orange), measured from pole to pole and each extending in longitude 6 °. Zone 1 extends from the International Date Line (180°W) to 174°W. d., zone 2 - from 174°w. up to 168°w. and so on up to zone 60, covering the segment of the globe from 174°E. to the International Date Line.

The center line of each zone, drawn from pole to pole and dividing it into two equal halves, is assigned a value of 500 m. The position of a point to the east of the axis is indicated by a number greater than 000, and to the west by a number less than 500. Northern and southern declinations are estimated relative to the equator, which is assigned a value of zero.

SUPM provides location indication with an accuracy of one square meter. The complete set of coordinates of a point on the earth's surface in accordance with this system includes the number of the zone, the eastern declination (relative to the western border of the zone), and the distance to the north or south of the equator.

For example, the full CMTS coordinates of a point located in central New York might be: zone 18453924E 4506327N. However, the indication of full coordinates with the definition of a specific square meter of area is rarely required. In most cases, a six-digit coordinate value with an indication of a 100x100 m square is sufficient. Then, for the mentioned point in the center of New York, the location determinant is reduced to 539.

The SUPM grid is present on most topographic maps produced in the USA, Canada, France, Germany and Australia. The use of the grid is confirmed by a laconic inscription in the corner of the map, which also indicates the number of the zone and the way the grid is presented, for example, "SUPPM marks with a discharge of 1000 m, zone 18, color blue". On most American maps, grid lines are not drawn on the main field of the map, but are marked with strokes across the field of the sheet.

It is enough for the user to connect them with lines using a pencil or to impose a transparent coordinate template on the map.

The grid lines are usually numbered as follows: 380000mE for east declination and 4045000mN for north declination. Larger, bold numbers indicate intervals of 1 km. Often, the full designation of coordinates is given only at the corners of the map, and intermediate strokes are marked only with two-digit numbers with a spacing of 1 km.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Intel Alder Lake vPro Processors 05.03.2022

Intel introduced the 12th generation of Core mobile and desktop processors with vPro technologies. In fact, these chips are copies of the previously presented "regular" Alder Lake models, but have a higher level of data protection and remote administration tools. Therefore, these chips are primarily positioned as business solutions, but they can also be found in retail.

The new Alder Lake vPro processors incorporate features introduced with the 11th Gen Core vPro (Tiger Lake) mobile processors a year ago. Among them are Intel Control Flow Enforcement Technology (CET) and Intel Threat Detection (TDT). They are now part of the Intel Hardware Shield technology to protect software on systems running Windows. The company has also added new protections against ransomware, cryptomining software, and other attacks to Hardware Shield.

Alder Lake's updated vPro processor protection technologies, explains Stephanie Hallford, Intel vice president and general manager of Client Business Platforms, monitor "good" and "bad" application behavior. New protection technologies are designed to block attacks such as Living off the land, the task of which is to integrate malicious code into existing legitimate software in order to subsequently attack the entire system.

Alder Lake vPro processors also feature Total Memory Encryption Multi-Key (TME-MK) and Intel Virtualization Technology with Redirect Protection (VT-rp) technologies. Their tasks are related to providing hardware support for new virtualization features that Microsoft plans to add to future versions of its operating systems.
