The main component xylolite are sawdust: magnesia cement (Sorel cement) serves as a binder. This cement is formed by the interaction of magnesium chloride (MgCl2) on magnesium oxide (MgO - burnt magnesia). The ongoing process can be expressed by the following equality:

MgO + MgCl2 = Mg2OCl2

The magnesium oxychloride obtained as a result of this reaction is insoluble in water, but special measures must be taken to prevent its reverse transformation into magnesia and magnesium chloride. Almost all magnesian masses are prone to this reverse transformation, with prolonged exposure to water. With such a reverse transformation, the magnesian mass is gradually destroyed.

In addition to sawdust, various mineral substances are used as the main substance. Depending on the quantity of the latter, the mass changes its properties of wood pulp and approaches a stone-like mass. Similar changes in the basic and additional materials, as well as in the quantity and composition of magnesia cement, and finally, various production methods make it possible to produce products that are very different in their properties. It is often difficult to believe without knowledge of this production that they, in essence, represent the same product. This explains why such products are known under a wide variety of names.

In addition to the names xylolite and wood stone, the following are found: artificial wood, wood pulp, dolement, germalite, durament, linol, linolite, lingnolite, linotal, mineralite, mirament, papyrolite, torgament, terralite, fibrolite, etc. By the method of application, the masses related here can be divided into two groups. The masses of the first group are applied in a pasty state (when the reaction has not yet taken place) directly on walls, floors, etc., where it hardens into a strong, stable mass. The mass of the second group is pressed in molds at the factory, and only in the finished hardened form is it used for various purposes. The masses of the first group are used when it comes to achieving solid coverings, vestibules, stairs, verandas, etc. For floors, for the most part, ready-made molded tiles are used. From the same mass, you can mold various decorations for furniture, walls, picture frames and mirrors, etc.

The final product varies widely depending on the composition of the mixture and the type of filling substances. Masses consisting exclusively of sawdust and cement are most applicable for various claddings, because they muffle sound, and in addition, the floor laid out from such tiles does not give a feeling of cold (the so-called "warm" floor). When using mineral fillers, the nature of the mass will be more stone-like and more "cold".

The properties of xylolite largely depend on the constituents used.

The specific gravity of xylolite is on average 1,55. The tensile strength of air-dry xylolite is 250 kg per square meter. cm; after impregnation with linseed oil, the strength increases to 275 kg per sq. cm. Compression resistance ranges between 750 and 900 (and even higher) kg per square meter. see Xylolite is fairly refractory. Poor conductor of heat and sound. It is possible to drive nails into xylolite, as in a tree, it can be sawn, planed and processed on a lathe. Pressed xylolite objects are resistant to rain and insoluble even in hot water. Xylolite is easy to peel off, forms tight seams and does not give dust.

Xylolite mass applied directly to walls and floors is less resistant to atmospheric conditions and can only be used for exterior coatings if excess magnesium chloride is avoided in the most exact way. Ideal for cladding cornices, stairs, floors, walls, etc.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
