Why did the Danish engineer Karl Kroyler, who first proposed pumping not air into its hull, but expanded polystyrene (styrofoam) when lifting a sunken ship, fail to obtain a patent for his invention?

In 1964, a ship sank in the freshwater harbor of Kuwait City. They decided to raise it by pumping air into the hull. To do this, it was necessary to first seal the case by welding all, even the smallest, holes.

Such work, according to experts, could take six months. The situation was complicated by the fact that drinking water was supplied to the city from the harbor area, and the sunken cargo could cause its pollution.

The Danish engineer Karl Kroyler found a way out. He suggested pumping into the ship's hull not air, but polystyrene foam, familiar to everyone, foam, 98 percent consisting of air pores. Foam clogged the holes, only large holes had to be sealed, and as a result, rescue work took only a month and a half.

Encouraged by the success, Kroyler decided to get a patent for his invention. It turned out, however, that a similar method of raising sunken ships had already been "published", and Kroiler was refused.

The priority in the invention was found in the cartoon character of Walt Disney - Donald the Duck. During one of his adventures, he raises his yacht, filling it with ping-pong balls. It is a pity that Disney did not think of patenting his witty invention.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Giant icebergs of the past 07.01.2008

Danish oceanologists, measuring the bottom off the coast of West Greenland with an echo sounder, found traces of giant icebergs that floated in these waters more than 12 thousand years ago, during the last ice age.

In the bottom sediments, the echo sounder found "scratches" 750 meters wide and 40 meters deep. The depth of the ocean in this place then reached 950 meters (now 120 meters more).

This means that only the underwater part of such a giant had a height of about a kilometer. This is twice the size of the largest Antarctic icebergs of our time.
