How did the American company IBM come about?

In 1880, the tenth census took place in the United States. The campaigning bureau estimated that it would take at least 500 clerks to process population data using categories of gender, place of birth, occupation. Still, they would have had enough work for 7-8 years. Given the country's rapid population growth, the next census would require even more work and time. Radical changes were needed in the counting procedure - the buzzword "automation" was in the air.

The young engineer Herman Hollerith (1860-1929) answered the request for time. He worked as a census taker in the 1880 campaign, so the problem of automatic processing of statistical data did not give him rest. The solution matured in 1886: it is necessary to put data on cards, punching holes in them according to a certain system, and then probing these cards (punched cards) with needles. If the needle finds a hole and, having passed through it, touches a metal surface, then the electrical circuit closes and one is added to the calculation results. Two years later, Hollerith demonstrated his first electromechanical calculating machine, called at first an electric adder, and later a tabulator. The machine could quickly read and sort a variety of statistical records if they were originally encoded on punched cards. Actually, punched cards were not Hollerith's invention, however, the electromechanical data processing system on punched cards was developed by him.

This invention revolutionized the world of statistics. In 1890, Hollerith's invention was used for the first time in a census. The work that 500 clerks barely managed in 7 years, Hollerith did in just a month - on 43 tabulators (of course, an assistant sat behind each machine). In addition, the entire census cost half a million dollars less than the previous one. Hollerith received several awards and was made a professor at Columbia University.

In 1896, realizing that his vocation was not only statistics, but also business, Hollerith organized a small company in New York for the production of tabulation machines. After 15 years, this company merged with three other modest firms, and in 1924 this corporation received the modern name "International Business Machines Corporation" ("International Business Machines").

Now this giant of the world computer industry is better known under the abbreviated name "IBM" ("Ai-Bee-Em"). Of course, in the 1920s, IBM did not yet produce computers. Its main products were tabulators that worked on punched cards - fast (for their time) and reliable machines.

What city is Philadelphia cream cheese named after?

Philadelphia cream cheese has nothing to do with the famous million-plus city. For the first time in the United States, such cheese began to be produced by many different farmers in New York State in the 19th century. The cheese from farms near the small town of Philadelphia with a population of less than 2000 was famous for its special quality, which gave the name to the brand.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

test tube beef 02.10.2019

It seems that the future has already arrived, at least in individual countries. Israeli startup Aleph Farms managed to grow beef in a test tube, for which you can not only rejoice. A steak made from animal meat produced in a laboratory without killing animals, first hit the table and was appreciated by gourmets.

The Israeli test tube steak created by Aleph Farms is a real food revolution. Prior to this, scientists presented artificial meat in 2013. It was minced meat from synthesized protein, from which a hamburger was prepared. A simple fast food dish with an innovative cutlet, given the costs of research and production, was estimated by experts at several hundred thousand dollars.

Of course, there was no talk of any mass production, and the unique food simply became proof that meat can be obtained without killing animals. True, the product created in 2013 could be called meat with a huge stretch.

An Israeli startup went the other way and abandoned protein synthesis. The stem cells of a calf are taken as the basis of their product, so the grown meat can be called real without exaggeration. This is no longer an abstract shapeless minced meat, but a full-fledged piece of beef, although small, but having density, texture, color, and most importantly, the taste of meat.

"Clean meat", which is what they call products derived from animal cells, is the goal of many companies. A firm that manages to commercialize the production of such meat will instantly make its owners billionaires. But so far, the production of muscle fibers in a laboratory is an expensive and, alas, thankless task that takes a lot of time. Even the startup Aleph Farms, which is ahead of the rest today, spent about 3 weeks making a very small steak.

By the way, what do you think happened to the first "clean meat" steak? Oddly enough, the same as with a regular steak - it was fried and eaten by the creators themselves. The honor of preparing the first cell meat dish in the history of mankind fell to Israeli chef Amir Ilan. The cook said that since the piece of meat was small, it took no more than a minute to cook.
