Who and how first showed that air has weight?

The first to do this was the great Italian physicist, mechanic and astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), and in two ways.

In the first, qualitative experiment, Galileo, having achieved by thermal rarefaction of air in a flask with a long neck, carefully closed with a cork, made sure that if this vessel was allowed to float in water, then it would sink less than if the air was not rarefied.

In other quantitative experiments, Galileo used a pump to pump excess air into a flask, in addition to that normally contained in it, and measure the increase in the weight of the flask. Using ingenious tricks, Galileo measured the volume of air pumped into the flask, and based on this result determined the ratio of the specific gravity of air to the specific gravity of water. He got a value of 1:400. If we compare this value with the true one (1:773) and take into account what means Galileo then had at his disposal, then the accuracy of his measurements seems remarkable.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is daltonism?

All colors can be derived from the three primary colors: red, green, purple, or yellow, blue, and red. So, for example, the whole variety of colors of the plant world is obtained by various combinations of special granules with a pigment of only three colors: red, blue and yellow.

Thanks to the cells of the retina that are sensitive to red, green and violet light, our eyes are able to perceive the colors of the nature around us.

What happens when a person either does not perceive colors at all, or sees them in a completely different way than most? This phenomenon is called color blindness. Certain light rays, falling on the retina, do not cause in it the reaction that is characteristic of a normal eye.

Let's say a beam of red light stimulates cells that are sensitive not only to this color, but also to green.

The green beam affects the eye in exactly the same way, stimulating both the "red" and "green" parts of the retina. What does a person see when this happens? He does not distinguish between red and green, but instead sees yellow-gray. After all, when you mix red and green, you get just such a color.

But such people distinguish between blue, yellow and purple. But they can distinguish red from green only by a shade of yellow-gray.

There are people with slight deviations in the perception of colors, but they may not even be aware of it.

A colorblind person can learn at an early age to distinguish red from green, even if he sees both of these colors as yellow-gray. He does this not by color, like people with normal vision, but by tone and brightness.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Linux platform for cars with hypervisor 16.01.2014

Harman International Industries, known as a manufacturer of audio equipment, has announced a new scalable platform that is designed to create in-car infotainment systems. According to the company, it has focused on ensuring security and the rapid creation of applications by third-party developers.

The Linux distribution on which the platform is based is optimized to run applications commonly used in in-car multimedia centers. You can develop third-party applications using HTML5.

According to Sachin Lawande, president of Harman Infotainment, the new platform will allow car owners to update and set up their in-car multimedia systems in the same familiar and easy way as tablet and smartphone users do now. The company plans to create its own auto-app store on the Harman Cloud Services platform.

Of interest is the technology of protection against attacks through third-party software that interacts with the electronic systems of cars. In addition to encrypting data and securely loading applications, the engineers decided to use separate hypervisor virtual machines for system-critical tasks, as well as for infotainment software.

The Harman platform can also be integrated with Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS) systems. This refers to electronic assistants that can make driving easier: they control the distance in the stream to other cars, help with parking, braking, and make sure that the car does not accidentally leave its lane.

According to representatives of the developer company, the new platform for on-board multimedia systems is now ready for industrial implementation in vehicles. The developers predict the emergence of similar infotainments on the mass market within the next two years.
