When did English folklore and customs originate?

Faced with the fact that many pagan rites and customs played an important role in the life of the ancient inhabitants of England, the Christian church decided that it was better to give them a form acceptable to Christianity than to completely destroy them. Some of our traditions and rituals are over 2000 years old.

For example, ancient rituals intended to increase wealth and protect against evil forces are present in the life of modern people, although in a slightly modified form. Other traditions relate to holidays in honor of heroes of the distant past or major historical events. Still others originate from actions that once had a practical meaning, which have now become symbolic. Some folk dances have come down to our days from pre-Christian times, almost unchanged, but having lost their ritual significance.

The legends that tell about folk heroes originally existed only in oral form, and therefore it is difficult to judge how much they differ in their current form from the "original sources". Most of the British heroes, including King Arthur, are characters in the legends of the ancient Celts, and perhaps the only English representative among them is Robin Hood!

Many of the customs and traditions are related to folk holidays: Christmas, Maslenitsa, Easter, the holiday of the arrival of spring. Although they are celebrated everywhere, in different regions this occurs in different ways. Many customs that have been observed for many centuries have gradually disappeared over the past decades as a result of the massive migration of people at home and abroad, as well as the social upheavals experienced during the two world wars. Those that are still preserved are one of the few threads connecting the living today with their distant ancestors.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is an albino?

Albinos are people completely devoid of pigments, or dyes. All races have a certain amount of pigment, although some members of the white race (especially Scandinavians) have a very small amount of dyes in the body. What is the source of human pigmentation or coloration? Certain substances in the body interact with each other. These are substances such as chromogens and some enzymes. When enzymes act on chromogens, which are the basis of colors, pigmentation appears.

If a person lacks these substances in the body, then there is no pigmentation, and he is what we call an albino. This word comes from a Latin root meaning "white". Albino has pink eyes, which is due to the fact that blood circulates in the retina of the eye. Albino eyes are very sensitive to light. Therefore, such a person constantly squints and blinks. Albino hair is white all over the body. Even the internal tissues, including the brain and spinal cord, are white. By the way, a similar phenomenon can be found not only in humans, but also among plants and all kinds of animals.

You can even meet albino birds, and there is not a single human race in which albinos would not be found. It is believed that albinism can be inherited, that is, albino people can pass this property on to their children. Perhaps the best-known albinos to us are white mice, rats, and rabbits. But someone even saw albino squirrels and albino giraffes.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Bloodhound Mouse 12.09.2004

Biologists from the University of Florida in Tallahassee (USA) have bred a breed of mice, the sense of smell in which is significantly enhanced compared to ordinary mice. Oddly enough, for this it was not necessary to add a gene to mice, but to eliminate one of the existing ones.

The knocked-out gene produces a protein called Kv1.3, which is involved in the formation of "valves" in the nerve cell membrane that control the flow of potassium ions in and out of the cell. And the rate of flow of potassium ions depends on how quickly and actively the nerve cell reacts to stimuli.

The Kv1.3 protein is present in the cells of the olfactory bulbs, and the scientists thought that turning off its gene would lead to a weakening of the mouse's sense of smell. But it turned out that the sense of smell, on the contrary, is enhanced by 1000-10000 times. No other anomalies have been found in the new breed of rodents.
