Who Invented Paper?

Take a sheet of paper and try to tear it up and down. You will notice that the paper is more easily torn on one side than the other, and where the paper is torn, hair-thin fibers are visible.

What does it say? First, paper was made by a machine, otherwise it would tear equally in both directions. Second: paper consists of the smallest particles of cellulose, which forms the frame of a tree.

Man invented writing material long before there was paper. The ancient Egyptians, about 4000 years ago, took papyrus stems, peeled off the skin, and straightened it out. Then the strips of papyrus were laid crosswise and pressed so that they stuck together. A dried papyrus sheet was a good material for writing.

But it wasn't paper yet. It was invented in China around the year 105 by a man named Cai Lun. He found a way to make paper from the fibrous inner bark of the mulberry tree.

The Chinese learned to crush the bark in water to separate the fibers, then they poured the mixture onto trays that had long, narrow strips of bamboo at the bottom. When the water drained, the soft sheets were laid out to dry on a flat surface. Bamboo and old rags were used for this purpose. Later, someone figured out how to improve the quality of paper by adding starch to it.

Merchants from China traveled far to the north and west and came to the city of Samarkand. There the Arabs took over their secret and brought it to Spain. From there, the art of making paper spread throughout the world, reached Europe and came to England.

Over time, all sorts of methods were discovered and different machines were created for releasing paper. One of the most important was a machine that allows you to make long and very thin sheets of paper. It was invented in France in 1798.

Scientists managed to create a material with incredible compressibility and strength without experimenting. The next generation of materials should be responsive, multi-purpose and customizable. This can be achieved with structurally dominant materials (metamaterials), which use new geometries to achieve unprecedented properties and functionality.

According to the lead author of the work, inspiration came to him while examining solar sails. He thought about the possibility of creating such a material, a large area of ​​which could be compressed into a small volume. Then, according to him, we could create bicycles, umbrellas and many other things that, if desired, can be folded into a pocket.

Guided by machine learning, the scientists fabricated two algorithms that together converted brittle polymers into lightweight, recoverable, and supercompressible metamaterials. The macroscale program was set up to develop materials with maximum compressibility, while the microscale was designed to develop compounds with high strength and stiffness.
