Adhesive tape, or adhesive tape, is a film tape with an adhesive coating used in everyday life and in production, technologically using the physical phenomenon of adhesion. It is produced, as a rule, in the form of a roll with an external non-adhesive surface, much less often - with double-sided application of glue. It is used for gluing objects together, as well as a protective or decorative coating of objects.

Adhesion depends on the thickness of the adhesive layer (10-30 microns); glue is acrylic or rubber. It is applied to a film of various materials - foil, paper, polyethylene film, PVC film, etc. Polypropylene tape is usually called adhesive tape.

Few people know that the name Scotch, which has become synonymous with the words "adhesive tape" in our time, came from ... an insult that the first user of this product expressed against the inventors!

In the 20s, 3M produced, among other products, abrasives used in the process of painting cars. One day, Dick Drew, one of the company's researchers, brought new samples of sandpaper for testing to an auto repair shop in St. Paul, Minnesota.

At that time, cars painted in two colors were popular. To get a clear border between the colors, after applying the first paint, the painters covered the painted area with parchment, fixing it with adhesive tape. After applying the second paint, the parchment was peeled off, while the adhesive tape was often peeled off along with a layer of fresh paint. It is clear that after that it was necessary to paint part of the body again.

Dick Drew realized that a less durable glue was needed. In principle, all the components were already in stock: sandpaper consists of a base, glue and abrasive powder. Drew thrashed about modifying the base and adhesive, at times defying management's demands to quit and return to normal duties, and was successful.

Having made several two-inch-wide rolls of duct tape, Dick Drew personally took them to the auto repair shop and handed them to one of the painters. After applying the first color and drying, the painter stuck the tape along the border of the color junction, and was about to apply the second color, when suddenly the tape fell off. Carefully examining it, the painter noticed that the glue was not applied over the entire surface, but in narrow strips along both edges. Annoyed, the painter angrily tossed Drew, "Give this back to your Scottish bosses and tell them to put more glue on here!" (In the US and UK, the Scots are known for being tightfisted, and the word Scotch (Scotch) is actually a synonym for the word "stingy").

Dick Drew had a healthy sense of humor, and the Scotch moniker quickly stuck to the improved (glue all over) tape. 3M later trademarked Scotch.

The first 3M adhesive tape was opaque. Transparent tape appeared in 1929 through the efforts of the same Dick Drew. He drew attention to the new waterproof packaging material developed by Dupont - cellophane, and decided to use it, but not for packaging, but as the basis for the tape itself. On September 8, 1930, the first roll of clear tape was shipped to a customer.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

There is a stolen masterpiece of art 19.04.2007

The development of German scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Technological Design will help catch stolen works of art.

Today there are impressive databases of stolen masterpieces. However, it is difficult for the inspector who prepares the auction to search for an item among many thousands of its kind. Now the job will be easier. It will be enough to take a picture or sculpture with a cell phone camera and send its image to the data storage.

"Our program recognizes similar shapes in two images by outlines and color. At the same time, poor quality of the photo, such as traces of flash or increased brightness, will not knock it off the trail," says Dr. Bertram Nicolai, head of the work.
