В xylolite sawdust is bound by magnesia oxychloride. To get a strong connection, you need to mix the sawdust very carefully with magnesia. Therefore, burnt magnesia must be used in the form of a very fine flour. Magnesia cement can bind a very large amount of sawdust.

As proved by experiments, it is possible to obtain a mass of very high hardness by mixing 10 wt. including sawdust with only 1 wt. including burnt magnesite and an appropriate amount of magnesium chloride solution and water. If the source products are properly prepared, then burnt magnesia is first mixed with sawdust and minerals. Then add a solution of magnesium chloride, and the mixture is kneaded into a homogeneous mass.

Usually sawdust is pre-moistened with water. In this case, a dry mixture of magnesia and paints is first prepared, which is kneaded with a solution of magnesium chloride into porridge, after which moistened sawdust is mixed with it. It should be noted that some German factories first of all mix wet filling substances (sawdust) with a dry admixture of burnt magnesia and colorants, and then add a solution of magnesium chloride.

In small industries, the mixing of dry substances and kneading with lye is done manually, but it is difficult to achieve complete uniformity.

In large industries, rotating drums are used. Dry substances are placed in the drums, mixed, then sawdust is added and rotated until everything is well mixed. If you want to color the xylolithic mass with an admixture of a coloring powder, for example, Prussian blue, chrome yellow, bolus, Siena earth, etc., then you need to put the paint into the drum simultaneously with the magnesia powder. Then lye of magnesium chloride is introduced there and everything is well mixed until a homogeneous viscous dough is obtained.

The resulting dough can either be used directly for wall and floor cladding or molded.

Here are some tried and tested mass recipes for solid floors and wall cladding.

For a thick layer

Burnt magnesite 90 kg;
Sawdust moistened 50 kg;
Magnesium chloride solution 25 °Be containing 30 kg of dry magnesium chloride.

For a thick layer in damp rooms with good sound protection

Burnt magnesite 90 kg;
Sawdust (moistened) 44 kg;
Carbolineum 27 kg;
Magnesium chloride solution 15 °Be containing 25 kg of dry magnesium chloride.

For a thick layer in damp rooms

Burnt magnesite 90 kg;
Slag 160 kg;
Magnesium chloride solution 15 °Be containing 35 kg of dry magnesium chloride.

Thin layer for warm elastic lining

Burnt magnesite 105 kg;
sawdust 17-18 kg;
Cork groats 20 kg;
Kieselguhr 3,2 kg;
Paints 10-30 kg;
Oils for impregnation 15 kg;
A solution of magnesium chloride 20 °Be, corresponding to 35 kg of magnesium chloride.

The layer hardens in 18-20 hours.

Thin layer for warm, durable cladding

Burnt magnesite 90 kg;
sawdust 34 kg;
Paints 10-30 kg;
Talc 15 kg;
Impregnating oil 35 kg;
A solution of magnesium chloride 20 °Be, corresponding to 40 kg of magnesium chloride.

The lining hardens in 16-24 hours.

Thin layer for semi-warm durable cladding

Burnt magnesite 90 kg;
Asbestos (fibrous) 96 kg;
Kieselguhr 5 kg;
Paints 10-30 kg;
A solution of magnesium chloride 20 °Be, corresponding to 40 kg of magnesium chloride.

The lining hardens in 20-36 hours.

Thin layer for cold stone-like veneers

Burnt magnesite 90 kg;
Fine sand or ground mineral 240 kg;
Asbestos (fibrous) 16 kg;
A solution of magnesium chloride 20 °Be, corresponding to 40 kg of magnesium chloride.

The lining hardens in 18-36 hours.
