Solar-powered plane flying around the world

For the first time in history, an aircraft will attempt to fly around the world without a single drop of fuel: Solar Impulse 2, a solar-powered aircraft, took off from Abu Dhabi early yesterday morning.

Solar Impulse 2 is an improved version of the first generation model introduced in 2009. The aircraft has a wingspan of 72 meters, which exceeds the Boeing 747 (68,5 m). The weight of the aircraft is only 2,3 tons. The maximum speed is 140 km / h.

Photocells are located almost over the entire surface area of ​​the aircraft, the total number of which is about 17 thousand units. Solar panels generate electricity, which is used to power four electric motors and charge batteries.

Pilots Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg will take turns piloting Solar Impulse 2 during the historic flight. Each of them will spend an average of 250 hours per shift in a small cabin without climate control. At the same time, pilots will only be able to doze off for 20 minutes, not being able to sleep for a long time.

The flight will take place with a number of stops that are necessary for maintenance and proper rest for aviators. And, of course, at this time, an environmentally friendly aircraft will be demonstrated to the press.

The route of the mission is as follows: from Abu Dhabi, Solar Impulse 2 went to Oman, then the device must reach India, Burma and China. Then it is necessary to overcome the Pacific Ocean, the USA, the Atlantic Ocean, the territory of Europe and return to Abu Dhabi. In general, the flight will last about five months.
