What magazine achieved popularity by encouraging its use after reading on the toilet?

The American magazine Old Farmer's Almanac, which appeared in the 18th century, gained great popularity, among other things, because it was equipped with a hole near the edge. For him, the magazine was easily hung in the toilet and could be used "for its intended purpose." And the first industrial-scale toilet paper appeared in the United States only in 1857.

Where did tea come from?

It seems amazing when you think that we are still drinking the drinks that man enjoyed thousands of years ago! Tea is one of those drinks.

The Chinese have been appreciating the mild stimulating effects of tea for 4000 years! And the Western world had to wait long enough for them to get to know and love this drink - this is because tea was brought to Europe about 300 years ago. At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, people in Europe and North America began to drink tea. As a result, the tea trade in China flourished. To transport the best varieties of tea to North America and Europe, there were even high-speed ships called "tea clippers".

The British discovered wild tea bushes in the Indian city of Assam. Biologists believe that the Chinese brought the seeds from India and planted them in China, as no wild tea was found there. The British discovered that Indian plants made tea as good as Chinese ones. Gradually large tea plantations were established first in India and then in Ceylon. In Ceylon, tea production became a major industry, and in 1940 Ceylon surpassed China in tea exports.

Tea has also always grown in Java, Sumatra and Formosa.

There are two types of tea trees. In China, they reach 1 meter in height. And Indian trees can reach 6 meters if they are allowed to.

Do you know that the British are among the biggest tea drinkers? The average Englishman drinks about 4 kg of tea per year, while the average American drinks only 0,5 kg of tea in the same time.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Bear Eve 09.10.2011

In the 80s of the last century, geneticists, studying human mitochondrial genes, came to the conclusion that all people descended from one woman who lived in East Africa 140-280 thousand years ago. She was called "mitochondrial Eve". Genes from mitochondria are transmitted to offspring only from the mother, and in terms of their composition, all of humanity turned out to be practically homogeneous, which led to this hypothesis.

Now experts from University College London have conducted the same analysis of polar bear mitochondrial DNA. We used 242 samples from modern brown and polar bears, as well as the DNA of their fossils.

The conclusion of geneticists: modern polar bears are descended from a female brown bear who lived during the last ice age, about 50 thousand years ago, in Ireland. Bears became extinct in Ireland about 9000 years ago, and eight of the world's current polar bear populations are declining.
