Focus Description:

One of the spectators shuffles, then chooses and remembers one card from the deck unfolded like a fan.

The deck is then divided into two halves, and the spectator is asked to place their card on top of any of the piles. This pile is then shuffled and another spectator is asked to name any number between one and twenty-five. The cards are dealt face down from the bottom of the deck until the magician reaches that number. The spectator who has chosen the card is asked to name it and turn over the card that has just been dealt. This card is chosen by the spectator.

Focus secret:

For this trick, you need to get good at card shifting, as you will have to deal a certain number of cards from the bottom of the deck while holding the bottom card. You will also need to perform two false shuffles.

1. When the spectator, let's call her Julia, takes her card, as accurately as possible, divide the deck into two halves and place two piles face down on the table. Ask Julia to memorize her card and place it face down on any pile. Set the other pile aside and take the pile with the Julia card on top. Tell the spectators that you will completely shuffle the cards and do a fake shuffle 3 to move the card down, then do a fake shuffle 2 a couple more times to keep it there.

2. Now ask another spectator, say Boris, to choose a number between one and twenty-four. Tell him that you split the deck in two to save time and that you think there are about 24 cards in one pile. Suppose Boris calls "fifteen".

3. While you are talking to Boris, bring the cards in your left hand, palm down, into order to allow for a shift. When you have finished talking to Boris, the little finger of your left hand should push the bottom card from the deck (Julia's card) as far as possible into your palm (preferably a couple of centimeters, if you can).

4. Tell the audience that you are going to deal cards on the table from the bottom of the deck until you reach the number named by Boris. In fact, you start dealing from the second card from the bottom of the deck, counting out loud until you really get to Boris's number, and then you deal the real bottom card - that is, the card originally chosen by Julia.

When you deal cards from the bottom of the deck, it should be well aligned. If you accidentally pushed the bottom cards forward, push them back. You don't need them to come forward when it's time to actually draw the bottom card: otherwise you'll have to go too far for it, which will make your manipulation visible. When you put the last card on the table, push the real bottom card forward with your little finger so that you can deal it on the table quite naturally. Oddly enough, overconfidence in dealing the second card from the bottom can be the cause of the error, so that when you need to deal the really bottom card, you will forget and deal the second card from the bottom again.

5. Now say to the audience: "I hope this is the same card that Yulia first chose at random from the full deck. If you remember, this card was put in this half of the deck, and Boris called an arbitrary number, that is, 15. Here is the fifteenth the card I turned in. It would be an incredible coincidence if Boris found Julia's card, but that's what I'm hoping for. So, which card did you choose, Julia?"

6. Julia names a card and you ask her to turn over the one that was just dealt on the table. This is her card.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Artificial meteor showers 15.04.2023

Japanese start-up company ALE plans to arrange artificial "meteor showers". She uses the Sky Canvas project, which will drop material from its satellites, simulating the fall of stars.

ALE will be able to create space shows on demand anywhere on Earth. The show will be visible 100 kilometers in each direction from the epicenter of man-made meteors.

The first commercial show will be held in 2025 when Sky Canvas launches a third satellite into orbit.

The company claims that artificial meteors will move slower and shine brighter than real ones, so scientists will be able to better study this phenomenon.

The startup also noted the safety of such "meteorite showers" for other spacecraft, the environment and people.
