What historical event gave birth to the English idiom Turn with a blind eye?

During the Battle of Copenhagen, Sir Hyde Parker Jr., Commander-in-Chief of the British Navy, ordered a retreat. Noticing the commands coming through the semaphore alphabet, Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson put a telescope to his blind eye and said: "I do not see any signals", after which the forces under his command continued the battle and eventually defeated the Danish fleet. In the next naval battle, Nelson himself commanded the British, and the idiom "turning a blind eye" was fixed in the English language.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is a 17 year old locust?

There is no such concept. What is called a 17 year old locust is actually a 17 year old cicada which is a very different insect.

True locusts are grasshoppers, and calling a cicada a locust is a mistake. The 17-year-old cicada is an unusual insect. She lives longer than other insects (with the exception of the royal termite). Its life cycle proceeds as follows: a chrysalis, a small cicada, hatches from an egg on the branches of a tree. Then it falls to the ground, digs into it and attaches itself to the roots of plants. They remain in this immobile position for 17 years! Then some secret instinct calls them into the light.

Cicadas crawl up tree trunks, their skin falls off, and a real cicada appears. For about five weeks they live a happy life in the sunlight. Male cicadas, and only they, are able to chirp, produce that metallic sound, which is called the "voice of the cicada." This sound is the call of the male to his girlfriend. Sound is produced by one of the most complex musical organs in nature. These are small, drum-like plates at the end of the torso, they constantly vibrate, set in motion by muscles that never seem to get tired. Five weeks pass and the cicada dies.

It takes 17 years of development for five happy weeks of life. The 17-year-old cicada (in the South it takes 13 years to develop) is found only in the United States. Although there are about a thousand species of cicadas in total, most of them live in the tropics.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

AI beat a human at poker 09.03.2017

Matej Moravcik of the University of Alberta and other members of an international team of scientists from Canadian and Czech academic institutions have developed an artificial intelligence system that can beat a human in the most difficult version of poker known as Texas Hold'em. This is a complex game, the number of possible moves in it reaches 10160.

A feature of poker in terms of AI work is unequal access to information. For example, in the case of chess, all players see the same pieces on the board, while in a card game the distribution of information at each moment of time is asymmetrical - only the player himself knows his set of cards.

DeepStack - as the new system is called - beat 10 out of 11 and professional players in more than 3000 games. Strictly speaking, he beat the 11th, only the advantage is not big enough. Before each move, the AI recalculated the strategy of the game, subject to restrictions on the depth of calculations and types of moves, which allowed the number of possible moves in each round to be limited to about 107. (Traditionally, AI calculates all possible scenarios before the move, up to the last move). Such calculations took DeepStack only five seconds.

Such systems can be effective in practical applications, since asymmetric distribution of information is quite common in the real world, for example, when it comes to protecting strategic resources or important medical recommendations.
