Did you know?

What is an autogyro?

The autogyro, as it were, combines the features and flight qualities of an aircraft and a helicopter at the same time. It has a fuselage (that is, a body) like an airplane, and two propellers. With the help of one, he takes off vertically upwards, and then flies with the help of the other, located, like an airplane, in front.

The Spanish designer Juan de Sierva is considered the father of the first autogyro. He designed and built the first autogyro in 1919. True, his gyroplanes were extremely capricious: they broke down, overturned and did not want to fly in any way as they should. But the stubborn designer nevertheless brought his offspring "to mind" and in 1923 created a successful model. In 1928, gyroplanes were even launched into serial production, and the Pitcairn gyroplane was adopted by the US Marine Corps.

But still, these aircraft were not widely used, since the designers could not manage to combine the maneuverability of helicopters and the speed of aircraft in them. Quite the contrary: gyroplanes combined the slowness of helicopters and the low maneuverability of aircraft. Soon the helicopters replaced the autogyros.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Super glue will close wounds in the stomach and stop the leakage of acids in the plant 16.03.2012

Scientists from the University of California have created a self-healing hydrogel that can be widely used in various fields and areas: from creating unique sealants for industry to targeted drug delivery and reliable, painless medical sutures.

The gel sticks together different materials in seconds, like Velcro, and forms a strong and flexible bond that can withstand repeated stretching. The hydrogel consists of linked chains of polymer molecules that form a flexible, jelly-like material that can self-repair if damaged. So far, scientists have not been able to create a material with such properties that is non-traumatic for living tissues.

To develop the hydrogel molecule, scientists used computer simulations, which showed that the ability of the hydrogel to self-repair depends on the length of the side chain of the molecule. After the optimal length of this chain was selected, it was possible to create a hydrogel with unique properties. When two cylindrical pieces of gel were placed in the acidified solution, they instantly stuck together. Further experiments showed that by adjusting the pH of the solution, it is possible to control the degree of adhesion of molecules and repeatedly connect / disconnect them without losing the properties of the hydrogel. At the same time, the acidic environment is very similar to that present in the human stomach, which means that in the future, the hydrogel will make it possible to treat very complex and dangerous cases of perforation of the walls of the stomach or to deliver targeted drugs to the stomach ulcer.

The new self-healing material can also be applied in the field of energy saving and waste management. Moreover, due to the dependence of the self-healing rate on acidity, the new gel can be used to seal leaks from acid tanks, which are very difficult to quickly fix with existing methods.
