Enhanced Solar Impulse solar-powered aircraft

20.04.2014

In Switzerland, the developers have presented an improved model of the aircraft Solar Impulse, powered by solar panels. Now the aircraft can fly up to 6 days. The goal of the project is a continuous 120-hour journey around the Earth.

The inventors of the solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse presented its second modification, the first round-the-world flight of the device will take place in a year, Agence France-Presse reported on Thursday. The presentation of the model took place at the Swiss air base Payern in front of an audience of 500 people, among whom were officials, sponsors and diplomats.

In the new modification, the aircraft has increased carrying capacity. Also now he will be able to fly for up to 6 days. Thanks to the isolated electrical circuit, the device can fly in heavy rainfall conditions. In addition, the dimensions have been increased: the wingspan is 72 m, which is comparable to the Airbus A-380. At the same time, the new model weighs 2,3 tons, which is less than 1% of the weight of the A-380. 17248 solar panels are installed on the wings and fuselage of the model.

"These two aircraft are the most energy efficient aircraft ever built. The first model was a prototype, a flying laboratory. We will need at least 5 days and nights to fly from China to the US and from there to Europe," said Solar Impulse pilot Andre Borschberg.

Test flights will begin in Switzerland next month, and after March 2015, the plane should fly east from a city in the Persian Gulf. During the round-the-world trip, 4-5 stops will be made.

Created by Swiss designers André Borchberg and Bertrand Piccard, the aircraft was first presented to the public at the end of June 2009. The first long-term flight of a solar-powered aircraft took place on April 7, 2010. Then Solar Impulse managed to spend approximately 75 minutes in the air.

In June 2012, the device made the first intercontinental flight from Switzerland to Morocco, covering a distance of about 2,5 thousand km in two stages. In May 2013, Solar Impulse made a flight, covering a record 26 thousand km in 1,5 hours.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Environmentally friendly fuel based on carbon dioxide 02.03.2022

Researchers from the University of Cambridge, together with specialists from the University of Nova de Lisboa in Portugal, have developed a method for obtaining environmentally friendly fuel from carbon dioxide by electrolysis.

Enzymes secreted by bacteria are used as catalysts in this process. The problem is that enzymes are very sensitive to the chemical environment, and when it changes, they stop working. In this case, the process of fuel formation is seriously slowed down. Experiments conducted in the laboratory have shown that the use of these enzymes as a catalyst increases the efficiency of fuel production by 18 times.

The scientists were able to increase the efficiency of electrolysis by fine-tuning the solution conditions to change the local environment of the enzymes.

"Enzymes have evolved over millions of years to be extremely efficient and selective - and they're great for fuel production because they don't have unwanted by-products," the scientists say.

Thanks to the proposed method of utilizing carbon dioxide, scientists offer a solution to several problems at once. Firstly, in this way it is possible to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases, solving the problem of global warming. There is no need to spend resources on capturing and storing carbon dioxide, which is quite expensive. At the same time, the problem of fuel production is being solved, which is very important, and the environment is not harmed during its production.

The fact that scientists were able to select the necessary parameters of the environment for the electrolysis process and accelerate it with the help of enzyme catalysts gives hope that the proposed method of obtaining fuel will be applied in practice.
