What photographer kept filming a volcanic eruption knowing he was going to die?

In 1980, there was a powerful eruption of the St. Helens volcano, located in the northwestern United States. Photographer Robert Landsburg, knowing in advance about the approaching activation of the volcano, visited the area around for several weeks to capture the phases of its change. On the morning of May 18, when the eruption itself began, he was several kilometers from the summit and realized from the rapidly approaching cloud of smoke that he would not have time to escape. Without any panic, Landsburg continued to take pictures, then packed the camera into a backpack and covered it with his body, which was found under a layer of ash 17 days later. Nothing happened to the camera, and the shots taken helped geologists to compile a complete documentary description of the eruption.

According to what indicator is the Russian postal service one of the last places in the world?

One of the most quoted economists in the world, American Andrey Shleifer, in 2012 presented the results of an experimental study of the work of postal services in various countries. Shleifer and his colleagues sent 2 letters to the 5 largest cities in each of the 159 countries that signed international postal agreements, which oblige them to deliver letters with addresses in Latin and return them to the sender if delivery fails. Errors were deliberately made in the addresses on the envelopes, so ideally all letters should have been sent back. As a result, a 100% return rate was recorded by the postal services of 10 countries, including the USA, Canada, Finland, Norway, and the Czech Republic. And Russia, along with such countries as Nigeria, Tajikistan and Cambodia, fell into the group of outsiders - not a single letter returned from these states.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

New software suite for designing digital video applications 30.07.2006

As a result of its work in the direction of creating innovative digital video systems, Texas Instruments introduced a new software kit for designing digital video devices based on DaVinci technology.

The new software suite includes a full version of the Linux operating system, which allows you to quickly and efficiently integrate and adapt complex systems. In addition to the MontaVista Linux operating system, the kit includes the eXpressDSP configuration kit and the TMS320DM644x SoC analyzer based on the eXpressDSP data visualization technology.

These funds will reduce the design time from several months to several weeks. Developers can use this kit to create set-top boxes, videophones, video surveillance systems, and other advanced video applications.
