What are the dimensions of the universe?

Let's try to imagine the scale of the Universe, taking for starters the size familiar to us: the height of the ceiling is 4 meters. Let's multiply it by ten thousand and at the same time we will go out into the stratosphere (40 kilometers). Let's take the next step: multiply by ten thousand more and get to the moon (400 kilometers), and multiply by ten thousand more, we will get to the edge of the solar system, which is 000 billion kilometers away, that is, the distance that light will travel in about 4 hours. This limit has already been reached by automatic stations sent from Earth.

The next step will catapult us directly to Alpha Centauri, the nearest star, 40 billion kilometers from Earth. Now one kilometer is ridiculously small, and the unit of measurement is a light year, which is a little less than 000 billion kilometers. Alpha Centauri is 10 light years away.

The sixth step will take us into the bowels of the Galaxy - a huge mass of hundreds of billions of stars, one of which, our Sun, is located on the outskirts of this cluster. After the next multiplication by ten thousand, that is, the next step, we will be taken to a distance of 400 million light years, while the stars are already obviously too small to be distinguishable, and the Universe seems to us evenly filled with billions of galaxies.

Further, even mentally, we will not be able to move forward. According to the ideas of modern science, it is impossible to see objects that are more distant than about 12 billion light years.

Such are the cosmic scales today.

How many kilometers between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans?

Panama is located on a narrow curved isthmus on the border of two continents and two oceans. The Spaniards, who were looking for the shortest route to India, discovered the Isthmus of Panama at the beginning of the XNUMXth century and made it a transit point. The looted gold and silver were brought here to be sent to Spain. From here, Spanish troops were sent to Central and South America to conquer new lands.

Since the middle of the 15th century, Americans have been trying to build a canal between the two oceans on the Isthmus of Panama. However, work began only at the beginning of the 1914th century, but the French construction company did not have enough funds to complete it. The construction of the Panama Canal was continued by the United States. On August 1920, XNUMX, the first American ship passed through it, and by XNUMX the canal was finally ready.

Entering the canal from the Caribbean Sea, ships pass through Lake Gatun. Then, through three locks, as if on steps, they descend into the Panama Bay of the Pacific Ocean. The whole journey of 80 kilometers takes 8 hours.

Panama receives significant income from the maintenance of this waterway. This small country also profits from the trade in bananas, coffee, oil, sugar, and meat.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

5G communication module for cars 20.10.2019

The South Korean company LG Innotek has introduced an automotive communication module that supports 5G networks. According to the manufacturer, this is the world's first 5G module for cars. It is built on the Qualcomm element base.

The design of the module includes a modem, memory and RF circuits - about 480 components in total. The module provides real-time traffic information exchange, precise location determination, V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything - between the vehicle and surrounding objects) communication and transmission of large amounts of data. In other words, it performs the key functions required for fully autonomous driving without driver intervention.

Using 5G technology for an in-vehicle communication module has proved challenging because it uses high frequencies, resulting in more signal loss than LTE (Long Term Evolution, 4G mobile technology). Another problem is the high heat dissipation.

However, 5G provides an important advantage: the module introduces a delay of 1 ms or less, which is an order of magnitude less than the delay of the LTE module. As a result, for example, if a self-driving vehicle traveling at a speed of 100 km/h detects an obstacle and activates the emergency braking function, in the case of an LTE module, braking starts after the vehicle has traveled 1,4 m, and with a 5G module, only 2,8 cm.

The dimensions of the module are 40 x 50 x 3,5 mm, so it is easy to install it anywhere inside or outside the car. Compatibility with LTE modules allows you to replace existing LTE modules without changing the system design.

The module can be used regardless of region or vehicle type as it complies with 3GPP Release 15.
