Who carved the faces on Mount Rushmore?

In the Black Mountains of South Dakota, 40 km southwest of Rapid City in America, is one of the most interesting sights. Mount Rushmore National Memorial. It was erected in honor of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Giant images of all four are carved into the granite of the mountain, which reaches 1745 m in height. The size of each face from chin to forehead is 18 meters, which is twice as large as the Great Sphinx.

The work was created by American sculptor Gatson Borglum. Borglum is a man who was interested in the development of American art. His works are also well known: the huge head of Lincoln in the city of Washington, the statue of General Sheridan and the figures of the twelve apostles in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in New York City.

Borglum began work on Mount Rushmore in August 1927. The first figure of Washington was completed on July 4, 1930. On March 6, 1941, Borglum died. Work on the creation of the memorial continued until October under the direction of his son Lincoln. But the last sculpture, Roosevelt, was never finished. 14 years passed between the start of work and its completion. The total cost was about $1 million. The federal government gave 84% of this cost. The rest of the funds came from private individuals.

Why did the Porsche 901 have to be renamed 911?

The Porsche 911 was originally released under the index 901. The number had to be changed after an objection from Peugeot, which claimed that it owns the rights to a way of naming models for the mass market with three digits with a zero in the middle. At the same time, Peugeot's claims did not apply to Porsche racing models, such as the 907 or 908.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Helium hard drives are expected to grow in popularity 25.02.2015

HGST, a division of Western Digital, first announced hard drives with helium HDA in 2013, and began mass deliveries in 2014. Such drives have a number of advantages over traditional ones, but they have not gained much popularity yet. Partly because of the high prices, partly because Western Digital and Seagate produce disks with conventional HDA of the same capacity. But this year the situation may change.

HGST currently offers 6TB and 8TB Ultrastar He models, and they have to compete with conventional Ultrastar, WD Ae 6,3TB, and Seagate Enterprise Capacity, Enterprise NAS and Archive drives ranging from 5TB to 8TB. As already mentioned, Ultrastar He has some advantages over competitors, but they are not enough to make "helium" disks popular enough. Over the coming months, HGST plans to release a 10 terabyte UltraStar HelioSeal drive that simply has no competition in terms of capacity.

It will have seven shingled platters with a capacity of 1,43 TB, and, as the name suggests, the HDA will be filled with helium. Seagate is planning a similar solution based on six 1,66TB platters, but it will most likely see the light only by the end of 2015, which means that the new Ultrastar He will have a good head start in time to gain popularity in the market.

The release of models with a capacity of 10 TB and the increase in the production of 8-terabyte variants of "helium" disks will significantly increase the popularity of this technology in the market.
