For a long time, which country received most of the income from the sale of postage stamps?

The Kingdom of Bhutan gained full independence from Great Britain in 1949, but did not have its own post office until 1962. When it appeared, the American businessman Bert Todd, who became an adviser to the king and greatly contributed to the modernization of this state, suggested betting on postage stamps. Bhutan was the first in the world to issue many unusual stamps - stereoscopic, wraparound, steel foil stamps, bas-relief stamps and even record stamps. They were printed in quantities far exceeding internal needs, and were intended for collectors around the world, with whom they enjoyed well-deserved popularity. In the 1970s, the sale of stamps was Bhutan's biggest source of income.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is extrasensory perception?

Have you ever had the feeling that you knew about something even before it happened? Or maybe you were able to determine what the reversed card would be or what number would be called? There are many people who seem to have such abilities - and not rarely, but much more often than the average person. How do they do it? It is believed that they have the gift of clairvoyance, or have extrasensory abilities. This means that they are able to comprehend that which is beyond the ordinary senses.

For more than 25 years, Professor J. B. Rhine of Duke University has been conducting experiments to prove that extrasensory perception exists and to measure it in humans. These experiments included clairvoyance, telepathy, and precognition. In experiments on clairvoyance, a special deck of cards was used. This deck consisted of five different cards with different symbols: a cross, a circle, a star, wavy lines, and a square.

The experiment was to get people who were supposed to have psychic powers to identify differently laid out cards without looking at them. If the number of correct guesses exceeded the achievement of the average person, then this was considered proof that the person had such abilities. In experiments on telepathy, a person tried to read the mind of someone who conducted an experiment with guessing cards.

In the future prediction experiment, an attempt was made to predict the sequence of events before their occurrence using the same cards and coins. There is a lot of controversy about whether these experiments really proved the existence of extrasensory perception. But there is also a strong belief that the results show something that is not happening just by chance.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Internet for robots predicted explosive growth 08.10.2016

According to Research and Markets experts, the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) market will reach $2022 billion by 21,44 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29,7% from 2016 to 2022 . The growth of the market, according to experts, will be driven by the entry of IoRT into the e-commerce business, as well as the expansion of the scope through the integration of robots with various technologies, short payback periods of projects and return on investment.

Experts note that the highest IoRT growth will be in the field of collaborative industrial robots working in contact with people - one of the most recent trends in industrial automation. Today, collaborative robots are used in various industrial segments, helping workers with welding, painting, sorting, and other tasks.

Besides, according to experts, in 2015 such segment of IoRT as house robots showed significant growth. "The prospect of the future is a kind of robotic butler who will serve people, helping them in their daily duties as a companion, freeing them from hard and monotonous work," Research and Markets explained. The ability of home robots to self-learning, the aging of the Earth's population and urbanization are noted as growth drivers for the segment.

Recall that earlier several large companies announced their own developments in the field of home artificial intelligence. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg intends to create a robot assistant. According to Zuckerberg, it will be controlled by voice commands. He will help the head of Facebook manage home appliances, including music systems, lighting, and so on, and at work he will help Zuckerberg visualize the necessary data to run the company more efficiently. This year, Google's Deep Mind artificial intelligence actually made an intellectual revolution by beating a human at the game of Go for the first time, there are many other examples.

The home assistant will be more of a software solution than a mechanism or an android. According to an international study by Ericsson Connected Home, in Russia more than 50% of people would like to have an integrated solution at their disposal that could be controlled from a single device. There are already many different components on the market, but they are all controlled from different applications, and most importantly, they practically do not interact with each other. In such a situation, they will be of little use. First, you need to create a complete smart home ecosystem, where some components are connected to others. The next step will be the integration into this network of some kind of home artificial intelligence that can control all devices.
