Nanoscale FM radio station

02.12.2013

A group of physicists and engineers from the United States and the Republic of Korea has created a nanoscale device for frequency modulation of signals with a frequency of about 100 MHz. This corresponds to the FM band. It was possible to achieve a sharp reduction in the dimensions of the device by replacing the quartz crystal with a graphene sheet.

The authors of the new development point out that quartz resonators traditionally used to generate signals with a frequency of about 100 MHz take up a lot of space and it is basically impossible to reduce their size. The principle of operation of a quartz oscillator is based on the mechanical oscillations of a crystal, and the frequency of such oscillations depends on the size: if the crystal is made smaller, its frequency will increase above the desired value.

The new device uses a graphene sheet about a micrometer in size. It is the basis of the oscillatory system, which provides the generation of a signal of a given (carrier) frequency. Under the action of another, modulating, signal (for example, sound), the frequency of the carrier oscillations changes in proportion to the applied voltage, and due to this, a signal is transmitted at a frequency much higher than the original one. The scientists demonstrated the operability of the circuit at room temperature, and also showed the possibility of modulating a graphene oscillatory circuit with an audio frequency signal.

Currently, graphene is attracting the attention of many research groups around the world. In early November, for example, engineers from the Gwangju University of Technology in Korea unveiled a graphene-based ionistor that is almost as good as lithium-ion batteries. The main obstacle to the widespread introduction of a new material is the lack of a proven technology for obtaining it in a sufficiently pure form.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Vector video codec developed 22.12.2012

According to researchers at the University of Bath in the UK, bitmap video encoding could become an anachronism in the coming years. This statement is based on the fact that scientists have managed to develop a video codec that uses a vector representation.

Pixel representation stores color information for each pixel. As the resolution increases, the required amount of memory increases proportionally. Vector representation, in which contours filled with a certain color are highlighted in the image, is more efficient and allows you to scale the image without losing quality. However, until now, it is claimed, there has not been a way to fill the space between the contours with a quality acceptable for professional use.

The Bath team did the trick by removing a hurdle to wide adoption of resolution-independent vector video. According to the participants of the project, their development will revolutionize the production of video materials. Of course, the participation of producers, in particular, companies involved in video post-production, is necessary for success.
