Autopilot of the Chinese search engine Baidu 24.07.2014

China's largest search engine Baidu intends to explore a new market for itself - automotive. An Internet company from the Middle Kingdom is interested in developing vehicles that can move without human intervention.

As Kai Yu, deputy director of the research laboratory Baidu Institute of Deep Learning, explained to The Next Web, this is not about creating an unmanned vehicle, but an intelligent assistant to drivers who, in certain situations, would take over some control functions. Such an electronic system will be able to collect various traffic information and use it in a specific car, said Mr. Yu.

He also explained that the views of Baidu and automakers on the future of the auto industry are different: the search engine is not thinking about replacing the driver, but about giving him more freedom than he has now. Kai Yu compared a "smart" car to a horse that moves independently and makes decisions in certain situations.

Baidu confirmed the development of self-driving vehicles to Tech in Asia, but added that the project was at an early stage.
