Which country's king once changed its motto to the exact opposite?

According to ancient legend, on the Pillars of Hercules there was an inscription "Non plus ultra" warning sailors, that is, "Nowhere else", symbolizing the end of the world. At the end of the 15th century, at the end of the Reconquista, the Pillars of Hercules became the territory of Spain, and the inscription was placed on the Spanish coat of arms. However, Columbus soon discovered America, and King Carlos I removed the particle from the motto, turning it into "Plus ultra" - "Beyond".

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why do we go in circles when we get lost?

There is one sure way to win the argument! Invite someone to walk blindfolded on the sidewalk, never getting off it. For sure, the one with whom you argue will lose, because soon after the start of the movement, he will begin to walk in circles. People who get lost in fog or during a blizzard often walk for many hours, being completely sure that they are going in a straight line. After a while, they return to where they came from.

And the reason that we cannot walk in a straight line without the help of vision is the asymmetry of our body. This means that there is no complete balance between the right and left halves of our body. For example, the heart is on the left, the liver is on the right. The skeleton is also asymmetrical. The back is not perfectly straight. Our feet are also not the same size. All this means that the muscular system of our body is asymmetrical and unbalanced.

Since our muscles on the right and left are different, this also affects how we walk, our gait. If we close our eyes, then our gait will depend on the muscles and structure of our body, and one side will make us turn in a certain direction. We end up going in circles.

By the way, this applies not only to our legs, but also to our hands. Experiments were made during which blindfolded people tried to drive a car. After about 20 seconds, all participants in the experiment began to move off the road! That's a compelling reason to keep our eyes open when we're walking or driving!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Alcohol instead of gasoline 01.01.2013

Will the air in big cities become cleaner if cars switch from petroleum fuel to biological ethyl alcohol? After all, burning alcohol gives only water and carbon dioxide, without sulfur and nitrogen oxides. An unintentional experiment conducted every year in Brazil's largest city, São Paulo, shows that to improve the atmosphere, you need to have a lot of "alcohol" cars.

There are about six million cars in São Paulo, of which one and a half million are capable of running on both gasoline and alcohol. The price of gasoline is regulated by the state regardless of world oil prices and is stable throughout the year, while the price of alcohol fluctuates, falling every time the sugar cane is harvested. Therefore, virtually all car owners who are able to switch to alcohol do so for several months every year.

Brazilian environmentalists analyzed data on air pollution regularly collected at 22 stations around the city. It turned out that during the "alcohol season" air quality does not improve, that is, in order for the effect to become noticeable, more than a quarter of the fleet of cars must run on alcohol.
