Which penguins live at temperatures above 20 ° C all year round?

Not all penguins live in Antarctica or areas adjacent to the open sea of the Southern Hemisphere with a cold climate. On the Galapagos Islands, which are located almost on the equator, there is a species called the Galapagos penguins. Here all year round the water temperature is +22...+24 °C, and the air temperature is +18...+28 °C.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Whose notes can be read both from top to bottom and from bottom to top, forming a duet of two violins?

Among the works of Mozart there is an unusual duet for two violins. The musicians should stand facing each other and put the page with the notes between them. Each violin plays a different part, but both parts are recorded on the same page. The violinists begin to read notes from different ends of the sheet, then meet in the middle and again move away from each other, and in general a beautiful melody is obtained.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Dark matter can heat planets from the inside 01.04.2021

Astronomers have suggested that dark matter accumulates in the depths of massive exoplanets and its presence can be detected by an increase in their temperature.

It is believed that most of the mass of galaxies falls not on stars, planets and gas clouds, but on dark matter. Its presence is detected by the gravitational influence on ordinary matter - stars, gas, and so on. It is believed that under the influence of dark matter, a large-scale structure of the Universe is formed, galaxies are born and evolve, surrounding them with an extensive "dark halo". However, dark matter does not participate in any other form of fundamental interactions, apart from gravitational ones.

It does not emit or absorb electromagnetic waves, so it remains invisible to our telescopes. Astrophysicists are still arguing about what particles it consists of, where and how best to look for them. Yuri Smirnov of Ohio University and Rebecca Leane of Stanford propose a new line of research - in the cores of exoplanets.

Indeed, earlier hypotheses were put forward that dark matter clots can accumulate in the centers of heavy and dense celestial bodies - primarily neutron stars. A similar thing is possible for sufficiently large and massive exoplanets - and under its influence, the cores of such planets should additionally heat up. According to scientists, the elevated temperature may indicate the presence of dark matter inside. In order for this weak signal to be seen, the exoplanet must be large and as cold as possible.

Therefore, she should be very old and be as far away from her star as possible in order to have time to cool down as much as possible - otherwise, according to Smirnov, it will be "difficult to see a candle against the backdrop of a forest fire." Even better, if the planet formed in a system closer to the center of the Galaxy, where the density of dark matter is greater than at the periphery. And ideally, it should be an "orphan planet", thrown out of its star system and flying freely through the empty and cold spaces of the Galaxy.

Scientists estimate that for such an exoplanet with a mass of 14 Jupiter masses, the annihilation of dark matter particles should increase the temperature by 250-500 kelvins. If we can take "bulk" measurements of the temperature of such exoplanets and distribute them on a map of the Milky Way, then we can see if it rises closer to the center. Such a signal will be an indication of the presence of the long-awaited dark matter in them.

The authors believe that it is quite possible to make the necessary observations. The James Webb and Nancy Grace RST space telescopes, which are preparing to launch in 2021 and 2025, respectively, will be able to do this.
