Which movie helped you make the right decisions to save the crew of Apollo 13?

Based on the 1969 film Lost, NASA develops an emergency plan to rescue three astronauts trapped in orbit with a limited supply of oxygen. When the picture was released, Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 had already visited the Moon, and a few months later Apollo 13 flew, on board of which there were also three crew members and an accident also occurred. Ground support engineer Jerry Woodfil had watched The Lost just a couple of hours before and later recalled that the events of the film directly influenced the flow of reasoning and helped to make the right decisions. For example, as in the movies, the astronauts were given instructions to recharge their batteries from a spare set, which was an undocumented possibility.

What is American Football?

With the football that we are used to in Europe, this American version of the game has almost nothing in common.

Two teams of 11 players each play with a 6-gram leather egg-shaped ball with the aim of bringing it to the opponent's end zone and placing it on the ground there. For this so-called "touch" the team receives XNUMX points. The next points the team will receive if they manage to throw the ball over the crossbar of the opponent's goal or carry the ball over the end line.

Due to the allowed hard collisions of the players, their equipment includes helmets and protective pads for the shoulders and other vulnerable areas.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

New type of magnetism discovered 13.02.2024

A team of researchers from ETH Zurich in Switzerland has made a discovery that revolutionizes the understanding of the properties of magnetism in synthetic materials.

The experiment was carried out on atomically thin meshes of two different synthetic materials, stacked and forming a moiré pattern. Widely studied to understand quantum phenomena, these materials have attracted the attention of the scientific world.

Traditionally, magnetism has been explained by the spin rotation of electrons as a collective process. But the new discovery reveals so-called "kinetic" magnetism, which arises from electrons competing for space in a material.

The experiment involved atomically thin layers of molybdenum diselenide and tungsten disulfide. When voltage was applied to the structure and irradiated with an electron beam, the material became magnetic. However, it is interesting that magnetism appeared only with a significant excess of electrons.

This amazing phenomenon, called Nagaoka "kinetic" magnetism, was predicted by Japanese physicist Yosuke Nagaoka. He suggested that the magnetic field could be formed due to the competition of electrons for free space, which distinguishes it from traditional models of ferromagnetism.

This discovery not only opens new horizons in the study of quantum physics, but also highlights unexpected aspects of the interaction of electrons in thin synthetic materials. In the future, such discoveries may form the basis for the development of innovative technologies in the field of electronics and magnetic materials.

The discovery of a new type of magnetism is a significant step in understanding the fundamental processes occurring in synthetic materials. This opens up prospects for the creation of new technologies and devices in electronics and magnetism.
