How did the first reconnaissance satellites transmit photographs?

In the first series of American and Soviet reconnaissance satellites, recording was carried out on ordinary film. After filling, the container with the film was dropped to Earth. Capsules from the American satellites "Corona" were able to both land and splash down, and could also be caught by an aircraft right in the air. The containers from the Soviet satellites "Zenith" were equipped with an auto-detonation system if it landed on foreign territory.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How does seaweed grow?

If you had an aquarium at home, you probably noticed that a greenish coating appeared on its surface, as if from nowhere. This is algae. And when you bathed in some ponds and lakes, some plants stuck to your feet. It's also algae. There are thousands of types of algae, and they grow all over the world: in swamps, ponds, lakes, rivers, and even oceans. Their sizes are different: from the smallest porous microorganisms to dense strong marine plants, reaching 30 meters in length.

Algae are one of the most primitive forms of plant life. Some of them consist of one independent cell. Others are connected in long chains, others form a whole network of cells. Some separate and form new colonies.

Algae contain chlorophyll, which helps them absorb sunlight and produce their own nutrients. In this, algae differ from fungi, their related plants.

The most widespread are green algae, which we observe in a quiet pond in the form of a greenish coating on the surface of the water. In addition to chlorophyll, some giant algae and kelp (brown algae) contain a yellowish-brown pigment. The stems of some brown algae are so strong and durable that they are used to make ropes and ropes from them, iodine is obtained from part of the algae.

Red algae - very beautiful marine plants, delicate in shape, have a different red color. There are so many of them that sea water acquires a reddish hue, as, for example, in the Red Sea.

Diatoms have tiny scales. After the death of the algae, these scales sink to the seabed, forming deposits up to several meters thick.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

desert crocodiles 09.09.2002

Biologists were struck by an unexpected discovery: in the south of the Sahara, in Mauritania, several groups of crocodiles were found.

Irish zoologist Tara Shine examined the temporary reservoirs of the Mauritanian part of the Sahara, filled with rare rains, and then dry up. In 19 percent of them, Shine was surprised to find crocodile populations. By all indications, these are Nile crocodiles, differing only in small size: the length of an ordinary Nile crocodile is up to five meters, and a desert one is one and a half meters.

Another feature: Saharan crocodiles do not attack people. Perhaps their small size makes them non-aggressive. Local tribes revere crocodiles as gods of water, so rare in these places. In some places, between the sand dunes and the rocks heated by the sun, you can find temporary swamps overgrown with grass. They store water from six months to four months a year. There are crocodiles. In one swamp there can be from one to three dozen individuals.

What do reptiles do during the dry season? They fall into a kind of hibernation, clog in holes or under stones, almost or completely losing mobility.

Local residents have long told visiting scientists that one can meet a crocodile in the desert, but until now these reports were considered unreliable.
