What is biology?

Do you like to read detective stories or watch them on TV? What makes them so exciting is that they keep you on your toes all the time. You want to know who committed the crime, how he did it, why. But the world around us is also full of various secrets.

Why do animals behave the way they do? What makes plants grow in particular ways? Why does our body act the way it does? Man has always wanted to solve these mysteries of life. And just as in the case of a detective investigating a criminal case, the first thing to do is to collect the facts. The collection and study of these facts was carried out by natural history. Nowadays this science is called biology. This word comes from two Greek words: "bios" which means "life" and "logos" which means "science".

Thus, biology is the study of all organisms, plants and animals. Their forms, activities, functions and their environment are studied. But today detective biologists are not satisfied with simply collecting random facts. They are trying to establish connections between them, some kind of relationship. For example, they are interested in finding out the connections of a person with millions of living beings surrounding him. They want to know what impact these living beings have on human development. Biologists are interested in the greatest mystery: how in general life first appeared on Earth and what forms it had.

Therefore, they study all the conditions necessary for life. And just like a detective bureau maintains an archive, they try to classify all the organisms that exist on the planet. In search of answers to their questions, biologists resort to the help of nature. They descend to the icy depths of the oceans, climb to the highest peaks in search of clues. They pave the way through the impenetrable jungle and spend hours looking through microscopes.

Sometimes they perform strange experiments to get to the secrets of life. Biology is a very complex science. It is divided into two parts: botany, which studies plants, and zoology, which studies animals. And each of these sections consists in turn of dozens of subsections.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Monkeys are like people 17.09.2008

Everyone knows that boys love to play with cars, and girls prefer dolls.

As biologists from the National Primate Research Center in Atlanta (USA) have shown, male and female monkeys differ in approximately the same addictions. Various toys were offered to a group of 11 male and 23 female macaques. They were mostly juveniles between one and four years old, but juveniles and adult monkeys also participated.

Males, as a rule, preferred toy trucks, carts, buses, and females willingly played with carts and plush dolls. Previously, a similar result was given by experiments with green monkeys.

Until now, it was believed that adults influence the choice of games by buying different sets of toys for boys and girls. But it seems that between the sexes there are some biological differences, deeply rooted in our animal ancestors, in their addiction to different toys.
